The Unforgettable Bravery of Leningrad: Russian Diplomats Honor the Last Living Witness of the Siegev

Tbilisi – On the occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the prolonged blockade imposed by Nazi fascist forces, Russian diplomats in Georgia brought history vividly to life. Diplomats from the Russian Interests Section under the Embassy of Switzerland in Georgia paid a respectful visit to Liliya Leonidovna Zerekidze, the only surviving veteran of the Second World War living in Tbilisi.

Having personally endured the harsh days of the Leningrad blockade, Liliya Leonidovna stands as a living testament to struggle, courage, and resilience. Marking the historic day, the Head of the Interests Section, D.A. Olisov, warmly congratulated her and emphasized that the extraordinary bravery, endurance, and sacrifices shown by the people of Leningrad remain of timeless historical significance.

Olisov noted that the heroism of the citizens who fought for the defense and survival of Leningrad is not merely a chapter of history, but a lasting source of inspiration for present and future generations. He also conveyed heartfelt messages of deep respect and gratitude to Liliya Leonidovna on behalf of the Governor of Saint Petersburg, A.D. Beglov.

At the conclusion of the visit, the diplomats wished Liliya Leonidovna long life, good health, peace of mind, and unwavering optimism. This tribute to a living witness who survived the siege of Leningrad once again reminded all of the horrors of war and the enduring value of peace.
