US Strategy and Nepal’s Sovereignty: Growing Challenges and Opportunities
Editorial

Once again, recent developments shows clearly bring Nepal at the center of American diplomacy and strategic planning. Washington has been describing Nepal as a sensitive point in its South Asian policy. Various levels of activities are being conducted, particularly with the aim of protecting the Free Tibet Movement, undermining BRI projects, and putting pressure on China from within Nepal.
From efforts to increase technical and ideological influence within political parties to outreach programs through international NGOs to the local level, all of these are being used as US strategic tools. Recent secret briefings and diplomatic cables also show that the US is viewing Nepal as a “land of influence within China’s security circle.”
However, another reality is also clear: if Nepal can strengthen its strategic interests, this growing international interest can be transformed into a golden opportunity. If Nepal prioritizes equitable diplomacy, independent decision-making, and multilateral balance, it can advance national interests while controlling foreign interference.
Therefore, the current moment is not only a challenge for Nepal, but also a turning point. If the country’s policymakers rise above momentary gains and foreign pressure and put national interests at the center, Nepal will be able to secure both its sovereignty and geopolitical balance.
