Train Derailment in Mexico, Many Passengers Injured

Mexico City, December 30. A passenger train derailed and plunged into a ravine from a bridge near Nizanda in southeastern Mexico yesterday, Sunday. Several people have been injured in the accident, and some passengers are trapped.
Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy informed about the accident on social media, stating that a train carrying 241 passengers and 9 crew members was involved in the crash. According to Oaxaca State Governor Salomón Jara, the train was en route to the municipality of Matías Romero when it derailed from the bridge and fell into the ravine.
A rescue operation has now been launched to evacuate the injured and extract the trapped passengers. Personnel from the police, navy, and civil protection are carrying out rescue work using ropes and specialized equipment.
“State civil protection coordination, police, and ambulance services are already providing support in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy. We will continue to provide updates,” Governor Jara said.
The cause of the accident has not been revealed yet, but preliminary estimates suggest that structural issues with the bridge or a fault in the railway track could be responsible. Local officials have stated that the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The train accident has once again raised concerns about transportation safety in Mexico. No fatalities have been reported so far, but rescue workers are emphasizing the urgency of completing the rescue operation quickly.
