UN Urges Restraint and Restoration of Information Access in Iran

New York/Tehran – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Iranian authorities to exercise maximum restraint amid the current situation and to ensure access to information within the country. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric specifically called on authorities to refrain from the unnecessary or disproportionate use of force.

In the statement, Guterres emphasized the need to safeguard citizens’ right to information by taking steps such as restoring communication services. He also urged respect for the right to peaceful expression and the adoption of measures aimed at reducing tensions.

Since late December, protests have erupted in several Iranian cities against the sharp depreciation of the national currency, the rial, and long-standing economic hardships. Iranian authorities have acknowledged the demonstrations and stated their willingness to address economic grievances, while also issuing stern warnings against violence and vandalism.

Meanwhile, in a televised address on Friday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on the public to preserve national unity, alleging that some protesters are attempting to please external powers.

Reports have emerged of clashes between police and groups described by the government as “rioters” during the protests. However, no official death toll has been released.

As the international community closely monitors developments in Iran, the United Nations’ appeal is being viewed as an effort to ease tensions and encourage dialogue.
