Chinese Go Master Nie Weiping Passes Away at 73

Chinese Go (Weiqi) master Nie Weiping passed away on Wednesday night in Beijing at the age of 73. The Chinese Weiqi (Go) Association confirmed his death on Thursday.

Nie was born on August 17, 1952. He rose to prominence in the international Go community in the 1980s after leading China’s team to victories in the China–Japan Go Challenge Series. During this period, he defeated numerous top Japanese players, bringing prestige and recognition to China in the Go world.

In 1988, he was honored with the title of “Go Master” by the then-State Physical Culture and Sports Commission of China. Nie Weiping also served as the honorary president of the Chinese Weiqi Association.

His passing is considered a significant loss to the global Go community. Nie Weiping made substantial contributions to the reputation and development of Go not only in China but also internationally.
