Supreme Court Takes an Extraordinary Step in a Sensitive Dispute, Summons All Three Parties for Hearing the Day After Tomorrow

Kathmandu — In a move that has sent ripples through the country’s political and constitutional circles, the Supreme Court has exercised exceptional caution in handling a sensitive dispute. Taking into account the gravity of the matter, the Court, without issuing even a show-cause order after convening the bench, has directed all three directly concerned parties—the Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, General Secretary Gagan Thapa, and the Election Commission—to appear for a hearing scheduled for the day after tomorrow.

This step by the Court is being viewed as a conscious and cautious approach, reflecting the constitutional significance of the dispute and its potential long-term consequences. As concerns grow that the electoral process itself could be disrupted until the issue is resolved, political uncertainty has further deepened.

Meanwhile, citing possible legal and political uncertainty, sources say that the resignations of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah and Bharatpur Metropolitan City Mayor Renu Dahal have been put on hold for today. It is expected that only the forthcoming hearing at the Supreme Court and the directions that follow will clarify the future course of this dispute.

Political parties, constitutional bodies, and civil society alike are now focused on the hearing scheduled for the day after tomorrow, from which decisive signals are expected regarding its impact on the country’s electoral process.
