China’s Cutting-Edge Warship ‘Zunyi’ Demonstrates New Capabilities in South China Sea

Beijing. China’s Type 055 class destroyer ‘Zunyi’ has developed new anti-submarine warfare capabilities during a free-form combat exercise held in the South China Sea. Chinese experts state that this warship has demonstrated its ability to play a leading role not only in air defense and anti-ship operations but also in anti-submarine warfare.

According to a report broadcast by Chinese state television (CCTV) on Tuesday, during this exercise, the ‘Zunyi’ was assigned reconnaissance and early warning missions for a naval task force. It successfully identified targets and collected a large amount of data, helping the task force build a comprehensive battlefield situational awareness network.

Military expert Wang Yunfei stated that due to the Type 055’s large displacement, its bow sonar and towed sonar systems could be larger and more advanced than those on the Type 052D destroyer and Type 054A frigate. This would enable it to detect submarines accurately from a greater distance. Furthermore, having two helicopter hangars allows it to deploy an additional Z-20 anti-submarine helicopter, extending its operational range.

Warship crew member Yang Minghan said, “This new type of destroyer is equipped with many advanced systems, but its underlying principles and operation are complex. We must fully comprehend every minute detail, connect thousands of these details, expand them into a complete system, and weave them into an integrated network, which ultimately translates into combat effectiveness.”

According to the CCTV report, over the past year, the ‘Zunyi’ has completed more than 200 days of long sea voyages, covering over 50,000 nautical miles. From participating in aircraft carrier battle group exercises to conducting combat patrols in the South China Sea and realistic combat training in distant seas, this warship has played a pioneering role in solving key problems.

This news clearly signals how China is continuously developing its naval capabilities in the South China Sea. The deployment of advanced weapon systems like the Type 055 and the continuous improvement in their operational capabilities are strengthening China’s position on the regional security map. Choosing the South China Sea as the area for exercises appears to be China’s way of robustly demonstrating its presence and preparedness in this region.
