Beyond Diplomacy: The Warmth of Russia–China Relations Reflected in Moscow on the Occasion of the Lunar New Year

Kathmandu – The relationship between Russia and China is not confined to written agreements and formal statements; it is guided by genuine friendship, mutual respect, and a shared sense of responsibility toward the future. This message was clearly highlighted by Maria Zakharova, Spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a special event held in Moscow.
According to her, in the coming weeks Chinese communities around the world, including in China itself, are preparing to celebrate the Lunar New Year. In China, this festival is observed with deep emotional attachment and thorough preparation. In this context, on January 23, the Chinese Embassy in Moscow organized a traditional New Year reception for representatives of leading Russian media outlets, with the participation of Russian diplomats as well.
Zakharova noted that the event went far beyond formal diplomatic protocol. Instead, it became a vivid example of the close and friendly relations between two nations that have long cooperated across various fields, including the information sphere. The program featured not only discussions on joint projects, achievements to date, and future cooperation plans, but also a shared experience in preparing traditional Chinese pancakes together.
Zakharova emphasized the deeper symbolic significance of these celebrations. On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, preparations are underway in Beijing to celebrate the traditional Russian festival Maslenitsa, complete with pancakes and street festivities. Likewise, a special festival dedicated to the Lunar New Year is set to be held in Moscow in February.
According to Zakharova, every visit to the Chinese Embassy located on Moscow’s “Ulitsa Druzhby” — the “Street of Friendship” — reinforces the sense that Russia–China friendship is grounded not merely in diplomatic documents, but in direct dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to building a common future.
The top leadership of both Russia and China have repeatedly stated that relations between the two countries have reached a historic high. Zakharova noted that this assessment is not only realistic, but that each passing year sees the relationship rise to new heights. She expressed confidence that many new chapters of cooperation and historic achievements will continue to be added to Russia–China relations in the future.
The message conveyed by this event is clear: the relationship between Russia and China is not just a strategic partnership, but a profound friendship proven and strengthened by time.
