157 Russian Prisoners of War Return Home in Humanitarian Prisoner Exchange

Kathmandu — Against the backdrop of the Russia–Ukraine conflict, a significant humanitarian development took place on February 5. According to the Russian side, 157 Russian soldiers held captive in areas under the control of the Kyiv authorities were released and returned home. In exchange, 157 prisoners of war from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) were handed over.

In the same process, three Russian civilians from the Kursk region were also freed after being illegally detained. Arrangements are underway to ensure their safe return home. Russian officials stated that these civilians had been held without any legal grounds.

The released Russian servicemen are currently on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, where they are receiving necessary psychological and medical assistance. Following initial health checks and psychological counseling, all of them will be transported to the Russian Federation. They will then undergo treatment and rehabilitation at medical facilities under the Russian Ministry of Defense.

It has been noted that international humanitarian efforts played a notable role in facilitating this prisoner exchange and the release of civilians. The United Arab Emirates and the United States provided support as humanitarian mediators in the process of securing the return of the Russian servicemen from captivity.

The development is being viewed as an example of humanitarian engagement amid the harsh realities of war. Analysts say it sends a message that even in the midst of ongoing conflict, the release of prisoners and the protection of civilians can be given priority.
