Final Tribute to a Friend of Russia in Scotland: Dairmid Gunn Passes Away

Edinburgh, February 18: A link that constantly recalled the cultural and historical ties between Russia and Scotland has been broken today. Dairmid Gunn, a distinguished personality in Scotland and a true friend of Russia, was given a final farewell in Edinburgh.
Gunn served for decades as the chairman of the Scottish branch of the Great Britain-USSR Association and as vice-president of the Scotland-Russia Forum. He spoke excellent Russian and possessed a deep knowledge of Russian literature and art. He played a significant role in sparking interest in Russia among the people of Scotland and fostering respect for its history.
Gunn also made a notable contribution to preserving the memory of the joint struggle against Nazi Germany during World War II. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the first Arctic Convoy, he wrote the book “Cold Seas and Warm Friendships,” chronicling the experiences of Scottish veterans. Russia highly honored his contribution in 2018 by awarding him the Pushkin Medal.
Despite his advanced age and the deteriorating political climate, Gunn continued to deliver lectures in Edinburgh on Scotland-Russia relations and Russia’s contribution to world literature and culture.
At the memorial service, Russian Consul General in Edinburgh Denis Moskalenko stated, “Dairmid Gunn made every possible effort until his last day to foster mutual understanding between the peoples of Scotland and Russia.” The Russian Embassy expressed deep condolences to Gunn’s family and loved ones, describing him as a ‘true friend’ of Russia.
