Russia’s Strong Reaction at the UN Against US-Israel Attack: ‘Violence Must Stop Immediately’
New York – Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia strongly condemned the armed attack carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran. He termed the attack another dangerous spasm of violence in the Middle East and demanded its immediate cessation.
Addressing the Security Council, Russian Ambassador Nebenzia said, “Since the early morning of February 28, the US and Israel have launched extensive military attacks on Iranian territory. It has been publicly declared that the targets of this attack include Iran’s top political leadership and peaceful nuclear facilities.”
Citing information received from Iranian officials, he stated, “As a result of this attack, more than two hundred civilians have been killed so far in 24 provinces.” Nebenzia expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. He also informed that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of Russian citizens in Iran.
The Russian Ambassador dismissed as ‘baseless’ the remarks by US President Donald Trump that the attack was carried out to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He said, “Iran has repeatedly emphasized its readiness to base any new agreement with the US on maintaining its status as a non-nuclear weapon state, provided its legal right to develop peaceful nuclear energy is respected.”
Nebenzia stated that attempts by Western countries to justify the US-Israeli aggression by citing alleged threats to international peace and security from Iran’s nuclear program are completely unfounded.
“The only source of reliable information on this matter is the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has never indicated that Iran is developing nuclear weapons,” he said. He called on IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to clearly condemn the violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by the US and Israel.
The Russian Ambassador firmly demanded that the US and Israel immediately cease their aggressive actions. He stated, “There is and will be no alternative to a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the Iranian issue, especially its nuclear aspect.”
He urged for the immediate resumption of political-diplomatic talks and to seek a solution based on international law, mutual respect, and a balance of interests. Nebenzia concluded, “Russia remains ever ready to provide all necessary assistance to such efforts.”
