Russia Condemns US-Israeli Attack on Iran, Says – ‘We Denounce Political Assassinations’

Moscow – Russia has strongly objected to the incident in which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with members of his family and high-ranking officials, were killed in a US-Israeli attack. Issuing a statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has termed it a grave violation of international law and a step contrary to the values of civilized international relations.

In the statement issued by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this joint attack by the US and Israel has been characterized as the vicious practice of ‘political assassination and hunting down leaders of sovereign nations.’ Russia has strongly condemned such an act, calling it fundamentally opposed to the basic principles of international relations and a gross violation of international law.

The statement reads, ‘The Russian Federation decisively opposes the practice of political assassinations and hunting down leaders of sovereign nations, which is contrary to the fundamental principles of civilized international relations and constitutes a gross violation of international law.’

Russia has also expressed concern over the increasing number of innocent civilian deaths and the significant damage to civilian infrastructure caused by the ongoing war.

According to the statement, due to Iran’s retaliatory strikes on US military bases in Arab nations of the Persian Gulf and the activation of air defense systems, international airports in Dubai and Al-Kuwait, seaports, high-rise buildings, and hotels in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia have been affected.

According to received information, maritime traffic has been halted in the Strait of Hormuz, considered the lifeline of global energy trade. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that this could completely halt the export of hydrocarbons (oil and gas) from the region and create a significant imbalance in the global oil and gas markets.

Russia has called for an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation of tensions, and a return to the political-diplomatic process for resolving problems based on the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The statement said, ‘We call for urgent de-escalation, cessation of hostilities, and a return to the political-diplomatic process aimed at resolving existing issues on the basis of the UN Charter and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. In this process, the legitimate interests of all states in the Persian Gulf must be taken into account.’
