UK Flouts International Law: China Demands Immediate Lifting of Sanctions on Its Companies

Kathmandu / The spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce has strongly condemned the new sanctions recently announced by the UK government, which were imposed under the pretext of targeting Russia. Speaking at a press conference held at the ministry, the spokesperson made it clear that the UK’s action is contrary to international law and lacks any legal basis.

During the press conference, a journalist raised a query regarding the UK Foreign Office’s decision on February 24 to place several Chinese companies on its sanctions list, alleging their connection with Russia. Responding to the question, the Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson expressed regret over the UK’s repeated targeting of Chinese businesses under such pretexts.

The spokesperson stated, “This unilateral sanction imposed by the UK, carried out without the authorization of the United Nations, is an affront to the spirit and essence of international law. China is deeply dissatisfied with this and firmly opposes it.”

Referring to China’s clear stance on the Ukraine crisis, the spokesperson added, “China has always strictly regulated the export of dual-use (military and civilian) items in accordance with its international obligations. The normal commercial cooperation between Chinese and Russian companies should not be improperly interfered with or affected by any party.”

China has urged the UK to immediately correct its mistake and lift the sanctions imposed on Chinese businesses, with a view to improving the bilateral relations, which have been affected by this chill. The spokesperson also warned that China will take all necessary measures to protect the legal rights and interests of its companies.

Analysts suggest that the UK has taken such a step against China under pressure from Western nations. However, China has made it clear that it will continue to strive for the protection of its national interests and the security of its businesses through both diplomatic and economic channels.
