A Powerful Nepali Perspective on International Conflict

Kathmandu, June 25 — Against the backdrop of the escalating Israel–Iran tensions and the ceasefire appeal by former U.S. President Donald Trump, Prem Sagar Poudel delivered an in-depth analysis on a national television program, shedding light on the implications for South Asia and Nepal’s foreign policy.

Speaking during the program, Poudel emphasized, “Nepal is a sovereign nation, we are not pawns in any power equation. Our foreign policy must be rooted in dignity, geography, and the interests of our people.”

Poudel interpreted Trump’s ceasefire call not as a humanitarian gesture but as a politically motivated move. “It appears to be part of his election strategy, dissatisfaction with Netanyahu, and an attempt to deflect attention from his ongoing legal challenges,” he explained.

On the regional front, Poudel highlighted serious concerns, noting the ripple effects of the conflict in South Asia. These include the vulnerability of India’s Chabahar project, rising oil prices, increased border tensions in Pakistan, and heightened risks for Nepali migrant workers in the Gulf.

Reiterating the need for balance, Poudel called on Nepal to adopt a foreign policy grounded in prudence and long-term national interest. “Nepal’s commitment to peace, cooperation, and sensitivity can serve as an example for the international community,” he stated.
