Brazil’s Former President Bolsonaro Transferred to Papuda Prison

Brasilia — Local media reported on Thursday that Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court has ordered the transfer of former President Jair Bolsonaro from the Federal Police Superintendency to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex.
Within the complex, Bolsonaro will be housed in a general staff room of the 19th Battalion of the Military Police of the Federal District, known as Papudinha. According to Justice Moraes’s decision, this unit offers more favorable conditions to meet the defense’s recent requests, such as extended visiting hours, the possibility of engaging in physical exercise during free time, and undergoing physiotherapy.
The decision guarantees Bolsonaro comprehensive 24-hour medical assistance from his previously registered private doctors without prior notice, as well as immediate transfer to a hospital in case of an emergency. Additionally, the prison system has authorized permanent medical care with 24-hour guard supervision, weekly visits from his wife and children, religious assistance, permission to read, the installation of protective bars on windows, and the attachment of support bars to his bed.
In September of last year, the Supreme Federal Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison for leading an attempted military coup.
