Celebrating Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day

Editorial

Nationalism is not limited to words; it is a blend of action and feeling. “There is a unique satisfaction in standing where the seed of the nation has been sown and holding the national flag.” Only when we feel pride in our land, history, and culture do we truly experience love and commitment to our nation.

History proves that a small but courageous Gorkha state, despite limited population and resources, had the capacity to face the world’s most powerful army—the British—in a multifront war. This was made possible only through the leadership and vision of His Majesty King Prithvi Narayan Shah. He laid the foundation for modern Nepal by unifying small principalities. His policies, foresight, and organized strategies empowered the Gorkha army, ensuring not only the territorial security of Nepal but also its recognition and influence on the international stage. It is this courage and steadfastness that gives us today the pride of being called “Valiant Nepalis.”

Even today, the vision, wisdom, and military strategy demonstrated by Prithvi Narayan Shah serve as invaluable lessons for modern Nepal. The intelligent use of limited resources, management of multifront challenges, and maintaining the morale of the people—all of these continue to guide us in ensuring national unity and prosperity.

As we celebrate Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day, it is not merely a formal occasion. It is a day to honor our historical identity, our shared responsibility, the struggles of our ancestors, and especially the far-sighted leadership of Prithvi Narayan Shah. When we stand holding the national flag, we are not only honoring a piece of cloth, but also the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of our forebears.

From an international perspective, patriotism and unity remain the foundation of security, identity, and stability for a small nation. Even nations with limited means can build a strong national identity—just as the Gorkha state and Prithvi Narayan Shah demonstrated in history.

Today is an opportunity for all Nepalis to remember our shared history, strengthen national unity, and gather the courage to face the challenges of the future.

Heartfelt greetings on Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day!
