Center-Left Candidate Seguro Secures Convincing Victory in Portugal

Kathmandu – Center-left Socialist Party candidate Antonio Jose Seguro has won the second round of Portugal’s presidential election.
According to preliminary data from the country’s Interior Ministry, 99 percent of the vote has been counted. Seguro secured 66.7 percent of the vote, while far-right Chega party leader Andre Ventura obtained 33.3 percent. Ventura has already conceded defeat.
Outgoing President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa called Seguro to congratulate him on his election victory.
In a statement published on the President’s website, de Sousa said he will welcome Seguro at the Belem Palace on Monday afternoon.
In the statement, de Sousa wished Seguro “success in his new term beginning March 9” and stated that he would fully cooperate to ensure a smooth institutional transition.
