China Could Help Trump and Putin End the War in Ukraine

# By Prem Sagar Poudel

The devastating war in Ukraine has deeply concerned the international community. This conflict has exacerbated humanitarian tragedies, global economic instability, and nuclear risks. Amid such a complex international crisis, China is widely trusted to play a pivotal role as a neutral and constructive mediator. Specifically, a proposal to organize seven-party talks in Beijing (involving China, the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations) and establish a UN-backed peacekeeping force presents a practical pathway to peace.

China is increasingly emerging as an active participant in global diplomacy. By maintaining an independent and neutral policy on the Ukraine crisis, China enhances its credibility as a mediator. As the world’s second-largest economy, China holds deep economic ties with both Russia and Ukraine. This provides China with effective leverage to bring both sides to the negotiating table. As a permanent Security Council member, China emphasizes multilateral solutions under UN leadership, forming the foundation of this proposal.

The proposed seven-party talks in Beijing offer a comprehensive framework for resolving the war. By including key stakeholders (warring parties, major powers, and international bodies), it ensures broad acceptance of any solution. The talks could develop a phased plan from an immediate ceasefire to a long-term political settlement. Beijing’s neutral ground would foster a trust-building environment among participants.

A UN-mandated multinational peacekeeping mission would deliver critical benefits. UN endorsement provides the mission with international legal legitimacy and neutrality. Peacekeepers could enforce ceasefires, protect civilians, and facilitate humanitarian aid. They would also assist in implementing agreements and laying foundations for lasting peacebuilding.

However, this proposal’s success depends on several prerequisites. The most significant obstacle is the lack of political will and mutual trust between Trump and Putin. Kyiv will not accept any solution that fails to guarantee its sovereignty. Western-Russian deadlock complicates passing resolutions at the UN.

The idea that China could help bring Trump and Putin together to end the Ukraine war is optimistic yet not unrealistic. The proposal for seven-party talks in Beijing and a UN-led peacekeeping mission offers a pragmatic blueprint for peace. It reflects China’s growing global leadership, commitment to multilateralism, and capacity to resolve complex international disputes.

Success hinges not only on China’s resolve but also on the political courage of the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, EU support, and effective UN stewardship. Peace processes are inherently risky, but this risk must be taken over the alternative of prolonged war. China’s multilateral approach offers Ukraine a vital opportunity for sustainable peace, potentially contributing significantly to global stability. Ultimately, it aligns with China’s vision of building a “community with a shared future for mankind” through global peace and development.
