China–Portugal Relations: 47 Years of Political Wisdom in Resolving the Macao Issue

Beijing – Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected President of Portugal, António José Seguro. In the message sent on Monday, President Xi highlighted the deep traditional friendship between China and Portugal.

In the message, he stated, “Over the 47 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, we have embraced the principles of mutual respect and support. With political wisdom, we resolved the Macao issue. Through a spirit of partnership, we have deepened mutually beneficial cooperation and maintained close coordination in international affairs. As a result, bilateral relations have consistently developed in a healthy and stable manner.”

President Xi also noted that he attaches great importance to the development of China–Portugal relations and expressed readiness to work with President Seguro to advance strategic dialogue, strengthen high-level mutual trust, and promote high-quality cooperation. He further expressed commitment to continuously enriching the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Portugal and delivering greater benefits to the people of both countries.
