China’s Path to Maritime Power: President Xi’s Article Calls for “Five Greater Focuses”

Beijing — An important article by Chinese President Xi Jinping, titled “Promoting the High-Quality Development of the Marine Economy,” will be published on March 16 in Issue No. 6 of the journal Qiushi.
The article emphasizes that China must promote the efficient development and utilization of marine resources in order to advance Chinese-style modernization. It stresses the need to pursue a development path that strengthens China’s comprehensive national capabilities while building a maritime power with Chinese characteristics.
The article outlines an overall framework highlighting “five areas requiring greater focus.” According to the article, China should place greater emphasis on innovation, accelerate the development of key core technologies, and achieve a higher level of self-reliance and strength in marine science and technology.
It also calls for greater coordination between land and sea development, as well as stronger synergy between mountainous regions and marine areas. The article further stresses focusing more on industrial upgrading and establishing a modern marine industrial system.
