Dragon Media and the Protection of National Interest in Nepal’s Media Landscape

# By Pasang Lhamu

The rise of Dragon Media in Nepal’s media world can be seen as a bold experiment. This media has been declaring itself to be an organization based on the “Soilism” principle, that is, the country first principle. But allegations made by controversial figures like Arjun Gyawali have put Dragon Media on the front lines of a geopolitical war. Dragon Media’s philosophy is clearly defined: national interest is paramount, a balanced foreign policy, and a culture of constructive criticism. For the media, Nepal’s territory, culture, and economic interests are of utmost importance. Friendly relations with both China and India, but not to remain silent about the mistakes of either. Patriotism does not mean supporting the government in everything, but constructive criticism in the national interest.

Scientific analysis of Arjun Gyawali’s allegations shows that they are baseless. Dragon Media has published an article in favor of Nepal’s territorial integrity regarding the issues of Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura. This has worked in Nepal’s interest, not against either China or India. A balance between “friendship and self-respect” is essential in international diplomacy. Pushpalal Study Society is an independent organization registered in Nepal. Interviews with respected intellectuals like Lokkrishna Bhattarai are a fundamental right of journalism. It is the duty of journalism to hear multiple sides of a historical subject. Dragon Media is an organization run by a Nepali citizen and registered under Nepali law. “Soilism” means not being subject to foreign interests.

Dragon Media’s role in the international context is important. Maintaining sovereignty for a small but strategically important nation like Nepal is a complex diplomatic art. Dragon Media has worked to present news from China, America, and India in a balanced manner in this region and to make the Nepali people geopolitically aware. In the 21st century, the media is a key weapon in hybrid warfare. Dragon Media has met this challenge by prioritizing reporting based on facts over emotion and promoting unity over division.

Arjun Gyawali’s behavior is an example of “uncontrolled aggression” from the perspective of international psychology. He considers those who hold different views from his to be traitors and has made a habit of calling his opponents “CIA agents”, “Russian agents”, and agents of the Indian RAW and Shiv Sena. Gyawali’s behavior is completely unacceptable from the perspective of international journalism codes. Threats such as “being forced to leave the country,” and the habit of attacking the personalities of opponents, encouraging aggression, are detrimental to national unity.

Dragon Media’s place in the geopolitical competition is clear. Nepal is currently caught between China’s BRI, India’s “Neighborhood First”, and America’s “Indo-Pacific Strategy”. In this situation, Dragon Media’s policy is clear: not to fall into any one camp and to measure all foreign investment and assistance by the criteria of Nepali interests. It is essential to speak up in a way that makes the voices of small nations heard in international relations. Dragon Media creates pressure in favor of Nepal’s territorial integrity and does not hesitate to take Nepal’s side even on controversial issues.

The strategic importance of Dragon Media for the future is inevitable. Nepal needs an independent, impartial, and nationally-interested media, and Dragon Media can fulfill this role. The international community should respect the independence of Nepali media and be vigilant if controversial media figures undermine national unity.

Dragon Media has set a new standard in Nepali journalism. This media outlet has managed to maintain a balance amidst international geopolitical pressures while remaining steadfast in its “Soilism” philosophy. The aggressive and chaotic behavior of figures like Arjun Gyawali only increases division and unrest in Nepali society. In such a situation, the role of organizations like Dragon Media is huge. The future of Nepali media lies in the hands of organizations like Dragon Media, which place national interests above all else, not foreign interests. Nepal needs such responsible media to protect its sovereignty and unity. The media is a mirror of a nation, and Dragon Media presents a true picture of Nepal – a proud and sovereign nation.
