Drone technology has created a new wave in global politics. These advanced devices, developed for both civilian and military applications, have reshaped technological competition, trade policies, military strategies, and international legal debates. In particular, the technological rivalry between the U.S. and China is significantly impacting global supply chains and security strategies.

The impact of drone technology can be analyzed in four key areas:

Technological Competition and Trade Tensions

The rapid advancement of drone technology has intensified competition between the U.S. and Chinese tech industries. The U.S. government has raised concerns over cybersecurity risks associated with Chinese drones and has initiated investigations. In response, China is expanding its dominance in the global market by supplying cost-effective and advanced drones.

Experts estimate that by 2026, the global drone market will exceed $100 billion, with China playing a significant role. China’s cost-efficient production strategy has made its drones highly popular worldwide, especially for surveillance and military purposes. This trend could further fragment global supply chains and escalate U.S.-China trade tensions.

Military Dominance and Aerial Strategy

Drones have become an integral part of modern warfare. Both the U.S. and China are competing to develop AI-controlled drones. China’s FH-97A, equipped with stealth technology, is designed to operate in coordination with the J-20 fighter jet. Meanwhile, the U.S. is developing a large fleet of affordable autonomous drones under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program to support traditional fighter jets.

These advancements will redefine aerial combat. In the future, wars may increasingly be fought with unmanned drones, bringing revolutionary changes to military capabilities.

Impact of Drones on the Global Market

China is not limiting its drone production to military use but is also strategically exporting its technology worldwide. Countries in the Middle East, Africa, and South America are purchasing China’s Wing Loong and CH-4 drones.

Additionally, under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China is supplying drones and other defense technologies, strengthening military partnerships with participating nations. In contrast, the U.S. has imposed strict regulations on drone exports, limiting its market influence.

Legal and Ethical Debates

The rapid development of drone technology has raised new legal and ethical challenges. In particular, the emergence of autonomous weapons systems has intensified debates about so-called “killer robots.”

The United Nations (UN) and human rights organizations are calling for regulations on autonomous weapons, as they can execute attacks without human intervention. However, powerful nations like the U.S., China, and Russia have not yet reached a clear international consensus on this issue.

Furthermore, the increasing use of drone surveillance systems has raised serious concerns about privacy and cybersecurity. Governments worldwide are deploying drones for security and crowd control, sparking new discussions on civil liberties.
