Factors Contributing to Social Discord and Instability in Nepal

# By Muna Chand

Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual nation. Social harmony is the backbone of Nepal’s stability, yet various internal and external factors are contributing to social discord, ethnic division, and instability. In recent years, some international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), foreign investors, and strategically engaged institutions have been observed promoting divisive agendas within Nepal.

Primary Factors Behind Social Discord in Nepal

Several key reasons contribute to the spread of social discord in Nepal:

Political division in the name of ethnic identity

Religious polarization

Promotion of extremist agendas under the guise of gender equality

Influence of foreign interests in development projects

Attempts to reshape power structures through media and social organizations

International Institutions and International Institutions and Their Influence in Nepal

The involvement of institutions that interfere with Nepal’s social and political stability has been evident for a long time. Their influence can be observed in various areas:

Political interference under the pretext of human rights

Activities that incite ethnic and gender-based divisions

Efforts to implement foreign agendas within local legal frameworks

The Role of the Open Society Foundation (OSF)

The Open Society Foundation (OSF), led by George Soros, is an international

organization that claims to promote democracy, human rights, and social equality. However, countries such as Russia, Hungary, and India have banned this organization, citing it as a threat to national security.

In Nepal, OSF and its affiliated organizations have invested in various sectors:

Media Influence: Providing grants under the banner of independent journalism to exert pressure on the government and traditional structures.

Investment in Communication Channels: OSF has been supporting independent journalism and local community radio stations in Nepal. Since 2007, OSF has invested approximately $1,390,000 (around NPR 160 million) in this sector.

Funding for LGBTQI+ Initiatives: OSF has contributed to promoting LGBTQI+ rights and equality. While specific details of OSF’s investment in Nepal’s LGBTQI+ projects remain unavailable, the organization has allocated $2,308,883 (around NPR 270 million) for LGBTQI+ issues in the Asia-Pacific region, some of which may have been utilized in Nepal.

Additionally, OSF has supported women, youth, and other marginalized communities in engaging with public policy discussions and political decision-making processes.

Western Influence in Nepal’s Education and Human Rights Discourse Education System: Promoting Western agendas through curriculum modifications.

Human Rights: Creating social discord in the name of addressing ethnic and gender inequalities.

Strategies for Using Ethnic and Gender Issues as Political Tools

Mobilization of Ethnic Associations: Promoting ethnic-based activism to influence social structures.

Advancing Radical Ideologies in the Name of Gender Equality: Supporting extreme viewpoints that do not align with Nepal’s cultural and social framework. Connecting Constitutional Amendments with Internal Instability: Encouraging debates on constitutional revisions to destabilize the country.

A closer analysis of OSF-related organizations in Nepal reveals a pattern of activities aimed at dividing society, exerting pressure on the government, and aligning Nepal with foreign interests.

Measures to Prevent Social Discord and Instability in Nepal

Strict monitoring of foreign-funded institutions influencing Nepal’s internal affairs.

Empowering the media and civil society while safeguarding them from external interests. Aligning the education system with Nepal’s indigenous identity.

Preventing ethnic and gender issues from becoming tools of foreign influence.

Ensuring Nepal’s stability, sovereignty, and national integrity requires serious debate and thorough research on these matters.
