From Kitchen Oil to Sky Fuel

Beijing / Cooking oil is often used efficiently in Chinese kitchens. But where does all that oil go after the meal is cooked? The question might surprise many.

Millions of metric tons of waste oil collected from across China are sent to a refinery in the eastern part of the country, where it is transformed into sustainable aviation fuel.

Turning kitchen waste into jet fuel may sound simple in theory, but in practice, it is no ordinary process. It involves complex steps such as purifying the oil, removing impurities, and fine-tuning chemical procedures.

This technology not only benefits the environment but also presents a modern example of waste management. Through such innovative measures, China is producing sustainable aviation fuel, contributing both to environmental protection and energy security.

This effort demonstrates that even everyday kitchen waste, when handled through the right processes, can be converted into fuel that powers the skies—safely, sustainably, and innovatively.
