Moscow \u2014 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in an interview with Russia’s Public Television, has accused Western nations of being indifferent to international law and asserted that the Trump administration openly considers its own morals and instincts as its guide.<\/p>\n

In the interview aired in Moscow on Thursday, Lavrov made clear that Russian diplomacy is centred on defending national interests and will only reach agreements with partners willing to cooperate on the basis of equality and mutual respect. “Our approach emphasises national interests, mutual respect, the ability to understand a counterpart’s legitimate perspectives, and pragmatism. Diplomacy, like any form of politics, is the art of the possible,” he said.<\/p>\n

On the Ukraine crisis, Lavrov stated that the objectives of the special military operation have been made perfectly clear and that President Putin has repeatedly reiterated them. Noting that the Russian-speaking populations of Donbass, Novorossiya, and Crimea faced discrimination and were declared terrorists following the 2014 coup, he stressed that diplomacy must remain principled and clear in its goals.<\/p>\n

In response to a question, Lavrov recalled the well-known saying dating back to the Russian Empire that “Russia has only two allies: its army and its navy,” and added, “Today, one could add the aerospace forces to that list.” He remarked wryly, “So, it seems the number of our allies is growing.”<\/p>\n

Referring to the notion that history develops in a spiral and sometimes repeats itself as farce, he noted, “What we are witnessing today, despite certain outward appearances that may indeed look like a farce, will have serious and long-lasting consequences.”<\/p>\n
