Kathmandu \u2014 US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, reached Everest Base Camp on Friday morning and formally launched the test flight of an American cargo drone named the Ultra X Gen 2. Acting US Ambassador to Nepal Scott Urbom was also present at the event. The drone demonstration, conducted without prior approval from the Nepali government, has sent shockwaves through Kathmandu’s diplomatic and political circles.<\/p>\n

Gor described the drone as a prime example of American technology, claiming it could assist in cleaning the Everest region and delivering emergency supplies, oxygen cylinders, and rescue equipment for climbers. “We are in beautiful Nepal. We are at Everest Base Camp, and here we have presented a prime example of American technology,” he stated. The cargo drone, said to have a payload capacity of approximately 5 kg, was manufactured by Freefly Systems.<\/p>\n

However, the unauthorised drone flight has raised serious questions about Nepal’s sovereignty. The Everest region is not only a sensitive border area for Nepal but also lies close to the frontier with China. The open testing of a drone there has irked China, a friendly neighbour, according to diplomatic analysts. The Nepali government has yet to issue any response.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as the American drone was being flown at Sagarmatha, a meeting between Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel and Major General Patrick A. Tighe \u2014 the military attach\u00e9 who accompanied Gor from New Delhi \u2014 was made public in the capital. The timing and context of the two events have made the situation all the more sensitive. Gor met with Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle on Friday afternoon and is scheduled to hold a breakfast meeting with RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane on Saturday morning. A meeting with Prime Minister Balen Shah, however, remains uncertain.<\/p>\n

Analysts view the incident as a sign of Nepal’s weak regulatory framework and intensifying geopolitical competition. “On one hand, the Prime Minister refuses to even meet foreign diplomats; on the other, drones are being flown at Sagarmatha without permission \u2014 the contradiction between the two has weakened Nepal’s diplomatic standing,” remarked a former diplomat. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has stated it has no information on the matter.<\/p>\n
