On the occasion, the Russian Foreign Ministry described the partnership with Pakistan as a priority of its foreign policy in South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>In the early years of Pakistan&#8217;s independence, the Soviet Union provided significant economic assistance to the newly established state, supplying tens of thousands of tonnes of food grain. In the 1970s, with Moscow&#8217;s technical expertise, Pakistan launched the development of its largest steel mill in Karachi, the Muzaffargarh, Multan-II and Guddu thermal power plants, and a radio station near Islamabad. The USSR also helped establish the Oil and Gas Development Company and contributed to the development of agriculture in the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Dialogue between Moscow and Islamabad continues to develop actively. In 2023, bilateral trade turnover between the two countries exceeded $1 billion. Russian and Pakistani pharmaceutical companies are now preparing to launch a joint project to produce insulin in Pakistan. Cooperation in education is also expanding \u2014 for the 2025\u20132026 academic year, 152 Russian government scholarships have been awarded to Pakistani students to study at Russian universities, with the number of students studying Russian at Pakistani universities steadily increasing each year.<\/p>\n<p>Russia and Pakistan work closely together on international platforms, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). &#8220;Pakistan is one of Russia&#8217;s key international partners in addressing security challenges and threats,&#8221; the statement noted.
