Kathmandu. Khadgajit Lama, a figure known for his proximity to China-exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, has been appointed chair of the Baudha and Melamchi Ghyang Guthi Management Committee. Khadgajit, who has been actively campaigning against the One China policy, was recently handed the leadership role.<\/p>\n

The newly formed committee includes Tasi Lama as secretary, Shailendra Lama as treasurer, and Kishor Lama and Nirmala Lama as members. The Guthi Sansthan, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward-6, Baudha and Melamchi Ghyang Guthi, and the District Administration Office serve as ex-officio members.<\/p>\n

The guthi had previously been served by Bhupatibajra Lama, who held the position of Chinese Lama. Sources indicate that the Guthi Sansthan persistently sought his removal from the day of his appointment. Bhupatibajra Lama was targeted specifically for raising concerns over land encroachment on Baudha Ghyang Guthi property. In a striking turn of events, those accused of encroaching upon the land have now been appointed, while the individual who pushed for its protection was removed.<\/p>\n

Khadgajit\u2019s appointment was made under the \u2018Shree Baudha and Melamchi Ghyang Guthi Management Committee Formation Order, 2083\u2019. He emerges from a controversial background.<\/p>\n

Accused of violating the country\u2019s foreign policy by actively engaging in the Dalai Lama\u2019s campaign, Khadgajit faces allegations of constructing unauthorized structures inside the Boudhanath Stupa premises and renting them out for profit. Sources claim that under the Shree Baudha Tamang Kalyan Guthi, of which he is chair, Khadgajit has been working to undermine the sanctity of the Baudha Ghyang Guthi and the Boudhanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guthi has built a house inside the stupa complex for lighting butter lamps, where devotees are reportedly charged a fee.<\/p>\n

A fire broke out in the lamp house a few years ago. Citing the risk the structure poses to the stupa, locals, tourism entrepreneurs, and social workers submitted an application to the District Administration Office on Bhadra 21, 2075, demanding its demolition. The administration has shown no interest in taking action, and the UNESCO-listed site remains vulnerable.<\/p>\n

The Archaeology Department had issued a directive on Bhadra 8, 2076, ordering the removal of the unauthorized structure built for commercial purposes within the Boudhanath Protected Monument Zone. The guthi had previously attempted to encroach upon Baudha Ghyang Guthi land at Phulbari Chowk to construct a party palace. When that plan failed, the guthi reportedly built sheds and began selling them.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, those familiar with the matter have raised suspicion after the Guthi Sansthan\u2014having pushed to oust Bhupatibajra Lama\u2014appointed an individual with a criminal assault charge as chair. Khadgajit had physically assaulted a person within the Baudha and Melamchi Ghyang Guthi premises. A complaint of criminal nuisance was subsequently filed against him. He was released only after admitting his guilt and reaching a settlement in the presence of then-Provincial Assembly member Chhiring Dorje Lama.<\/p>\n

Khadgajit is an ardent devotee of the Dalai Lama. He not only attends events featuring the Tibetan leader but has also been found using the guthi\u2019s official letterhead to write to others urging them to attend such programmes. He had sent such correspondence inviting people to the Kalachakra Wang programme held in Bodhgaya, India, from Poush 19 to Magh 2, 2073, where the Dalai Lama was the chief guest.<\/p>\n
