Moscow \u2013 On the occasion of the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent congratulatory messages to the leaders and peoples of former Soviet republics and neighbouring nations.<\/p>\n

According to details released by the Kremlin, Putin sent formal greetings to the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as to the leadership of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He also addressed the peoples of Georgia and Moldova.<\/p>\n

President Putin stressed that this day calls for remembering forebears with gratitude and respect. He stated, “On this day, we pay tribute with gratitude and respect to our fathers and grandfathers, who fought shoulder to shoulder on the front lines and worked tirelessly on the home front, bringing the long-awaited Victory over the Nazi invaders closer at the cost of immeasurable sacrifice and hardship.”<\/p>\n

In his congratulatory messages to foreign leaders and their citizens, Putin conveyed heartfelt greetings and sincere appreciation to veterans of the Great Patriotic War and home-front workers, wishing them sound health, high spirits, and longevity.<\/p>\n

Addressing the peoples of Georgia and Moldova, Putin called for preserving the memory of the harsh wartime years of 1941\u20131945 and passing on to future generations the noble traditions of friendship and mutual assistance that bind the peoples of the two countries.<\/p>\n

“We must preserve the memory of those harsh war years and hand down to the new generation the noble traditions of friendship and mutual assistance that unite the peoples of our countries,” Putin’s message read.<\/p>\n

Eighty-one years ago, on May 9, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered, marking Victory on the European front of the Second World War. For the then Soviet Union, it was the end of the ‘Great Patriotic War’, in which an estimated 27 million Soviet citizens lost their lives. To this day, the occasion is observed as the most significant national holiday in Russia and the former Soviet republics.<\/p>\n
