Nepalgunj \u2013 The Narainapur minor customs office in Banke, closed during the conflict era due to insecurity, is set to resume operations. Kishor Bartaula, director at the Department of Customs, informed that the office will operate under the Nepalgunj Customs Office and that construction of physical infrastructure and staff deployment will be carried out accordingly.<\/p>\n

Director Bartaula made it clear that this minor customs post is intended solely for temporary imports and household goods. Following the mention of establishing a minor customs office at Narainapur in the Customs Regulations 2083, local entrepreneurs and traders in the area have expressed their delight.<\/p>\n

Janardan Poudel, chief of the Nepalgunj Customs Office, informed that out of the seven minor customs offices once present in Banke, the others have been closed, and preparations are now underway to establish one only at Narainapur. “Of the seven minor customs offices here, only Narainapur’s name is included, and even that merely finds mention in the schedule of the Customs Regulations,” he said. Poudel noted that while large volumes of goods are not expected through Narainapur, potatoes, onions and some livestock may come through. According to him, the office can be brought into operation within a week of receiving approval.<\/p>\n

He did, however, point to the risk of misuse, alleging a tendency among traders to route goods through minor customs instead of the main customs point.<\/p>\n

Traders Upbeat<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chiranjivi Oli, senior vice-president of the Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed the move, saying the establishment of the minor customs office is a happy development for traders. He argued that goods arriving via the main customs will not be funnelled through the minor post, and that it would aid revenue collection as well as help curb smuggling. “This creates a favourable environment for those conducting legal business,” he said.<\/p>\n

Former chamber president Krishna Prasad Shrestha stressed that the Narainapur minor customs office must be run on a digital system. Expressing confidence that it would ease congestion at the Jamunaha border point, he insisted on transparent operations. “Smuggling must end, and local residents in the vicinity should benefit,” he said.<\/p>\n

Another former chamber president, Nandalal Vaishya, said this presents a good opportunity for Nepalgunj traders and would discourage illegal trade. All seven minor customs offices in Banke had been shut during the conflict period due to insecurity.<\/p>\n
