Moscow. On May 11, 1939, Japanese troops invaded the Mongolian People’s Republic and captured the border area on the western bank of the Khalkhin Gol River. In response, the Soviet Red Army and Mongolian forces launched a joint military operation to repel the Japanese invaders. This battle, which ended in the decisive defeat of the aggressors, is remembered today as a pivotal turning point in world history.<\/p>\n

Earlier, in 1931, Japan had attacked China, with the Kwantung Army treacherously occupying Manchuria without declaring war. On October 8, 1931, the Imperial Japanese Air Force bombed the Chinese city of Jinzhou, carrying out the world’s first aerial bombardment of a civilian city.<\/p>\n

In 1936, the Japanese government approved a strategy for expansion in East Asia, which envisaged not only the total conquest of China but also the invasion of Mongolia and the Soviet Union. On November 25 of that same year, Japan signed the so-called Anti-Comintern Pact with Nazi Germany, marking the beginning of a military-political alliance between the two. When Japan launched a full-scale war against China in June 1937, relations between Moscow and Tokyo grew even more tense.<\/p>\n

In July 1938, armed conflict erupted on the Soviet-Manchurian border. Japanese troops occupied the hills on the western shore of Lake Khasan, but after fierce fighting, Soviet forces drove them from the heights they had seized. Shortly thereafter, on May 11, 1939, Japanese forces invaded Mongolia.<\/p>\n

Fulfilling its obligations under the 1936 Protocol of Mutual Assistance, the Soviet Union came to the aid of its Mongolian comrades by deploying Red Army units. Under the command of Georgy Zhukov and Khorloogiin Choibalsan, the Soviet-Mongolian army, after heavy and brutal fighting, successfully encircled and destroyed the main enemy forces. On August 28, 1939, the Japanese-Manchurian troops were surrounded and annihilated, and by August 31, the territory of the Mongolian People’s Republic had been completely cleared of Japanese invaders.<\/p>\n

The defeat at Khalkhin Gol was devastating for the Kwantung Army. This victory significantly altered the balance of power on the eve of the Second World War. Soviet and Mongolian forces proved their superiority over the enemy, and Japan was forced to abandon its plans for a large-scale military invasion of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin, ahead of his visit to Mongolia in September 2024, stated, “Over 10,000 Red Army soldiers and commanders sacrificed their lives in that battle for Mongolia’s freedom and independence. Today, Russia and Mongolia further develop the invaluable traditions of friendship, good neighbourliness, and mutual assistance.” Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that the outcome of the clashes at Khalkhin Gol confirmed the effectiveness of the Soviet-Mongolian military-political alliance, adding that the lesson learned by the Japanese aggressors not only prevented further provocations on their part but also deterred Japan from entering the war against the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n
