Beijing \u2014 At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Donald J. Trump paid a state visit to China from May 13 to 15. During the visit, the two presidents held extensive discussions on China\u2013U.S. relations, world peace, development, economic cooperation, and international and regional issues, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press conference on May 15, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, described the summit as a historic meeting. According to him, the two presidents held open, in-depth, constructive, and strategic talks.<\/p>\n

Wang said both China and the United States are at important stages in their respective development paths. China is advancing Chinese modernization through high-quality development under its 15th Five-Year Plan, while the United States is marking the 250th anniversary of its independence. Against this backdrop, he said, the meeting between the two leaders sent an important message to the world.<\/p>\n

According to Wang, the two sides expressed the understanding that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the goal of making America great again can move forward together. He said both countries can support each other\u2019s success and contribute to global well-being.<\/p>\n

Wang said China\u2013U.S. relations have reached a new starting point. This was the first face-to-face meeting between President Xi and President Trump since their Busan meeting last October, and the first visit to China by a U.S. president in nine years. He noted that the world is once again standing at a crossroads, and how the two major powers manage competition, differences, and cooperation has become a matter of global concern.<\/p>\n

The most important political understanding reached at the meeting, Wang said, was the agreement to build a \u201cconstructive China\u2013U.S. relationship of strategic stability.\u201d According to him, this understanding will provide strategic guidance for bilateral relations over the next three years and beyond.<\/p>\n

Wang explained the new vision through four key ideas: positive stability with cooperation as the main foundation; healthy stability that keeps competition within proper limits; constant stability that makes differences manageable; and lasting stability based on peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n

He said China and the United States, as the world\u2019s two largest economies, cannot prosper by excluding each other. Even where competition exists, he said, it should be healthy, rule-based, and not a zero-sum game.<\/p>\n

During the visit, the two presidents agreed to expand exchanges in foreign policy, military relations, economy and trade, public health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people ties, and law enforcement. Wang said President Xi will pay a state visit to the United States this fall, and the two leaders agreed to remain in close contact through meetings, phone calls, and letters.<\/p>\n

On people-to-people exchanges, Wang said the hope of China\u2013U.S. relations lies in the people, its foundation in grassroots ties, its future in the youth, and its vitality in subnational exchanges. He said President Xi announced an initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs over five years. President Trump, he added, also reiterated that Chinese students are welcome in the United States.<\/p>\n

During the visit, the two presidents jointly toured the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. According to Wang, the visit reflected the Chinese cultural emphasis on harmony, respect for the laws of nature, and the need to deepen mutual understanding between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The Taiwan question was also an important topic at the summit. Wang reiterated China\u2019s position that Taiwan is China\u2019s internal affair, that the mainland and Taiwan are part of one China, and that the United States should strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three China\u2013U.S. joint communiqu\u00e9s. He said the proper handling of the Taiwan question would keep the overall relationship stable, while mishandling it could put relations at serious risk.<\/p>\n

On economy and trade, Wang said the two presidents held in-depth discussions. According to him, both sides agreed to continue implementing previous consultation outcomes, establish a board of trade and a board of investment, address concerns over market access for agricultural products, and expand two-way trade within the framework of reciprocal tariff reductions.<\/p>\n

The two leaders also discussed international and regional issues, including the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz, Iran, and the Ukraine crisis. Wang said President Xi emphasized that the use of force cannot solve problems and that dialogue is the only correct option. China supports continued talks between the United States and Iran, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, and a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

On the Ukraine crisis, Wang said both China and the United States want to see an early end to the conflict. He said there is no simple solution to such a complex issue, and that China and the United States are ready to maintain communication and play constructive roles in seeking a political settlement.<\/p>\n

Concluding the press briefing, Wang said China\u2013U.S. relations concern not only the interests of more than 1.7 billion people in the two countries, but also the interests of over eight billion people around the world. He said China is ready to work with the United States to implement the understandings reached by the two presidents in Beijing and explore the right way for major countries to coexist in the new era.<\/p>\n
