Nepal, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, has suddenly become the focal point of global powers. It is turning into an arena of interest, activity, and strategic gamesmanship for three major powers-China, the United States, and India. Nepal’s geopolitical position has compelled analysts of international relations to ask serious questions. Is Nepal on the verge of becoming a battleground for global powers? What lies at the very core of this? And why have these powers converged at the foot of Mount Everest?<\/p>\n

Nepal’s geopolitical significance lies primarily in its geographical location. Situated between China and India-two of the world’s largest economies and military powers-Nepal is a crucial link in the balance of power in South Asia. This country, lying in the lap of the Himalayas, is not merely a centre of natural beauty; it is also immensely significant from a strategic standpoint. The Siliguri Corridor, the Tibetan Plateau, and its position between the Indian subcontinent have established Nepal as a natural ‘buffer state’. In recent years, China’s BRI project, America’s Indo-Pacific strategy, and India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy have brought Nepal to the centre of a triangular competition. Although the interests of these three powers differ, everyone’s gaze is fixed on the same geography.<\/p>\n

China’s primary interest lies in the security of Tibet and the successful implementation of the BRI project. Nepal shares a border of over 1,400 kilometres with China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. For China, maintaining friendly and cooperative relations with Nepal is indispensable to preserving stability in Tibet. Projects such as the Kerung-Kathmandu railway, the Syaphrubesi-Rasuwagadhi highway, and the Chilime-Kerung transmission line are part of China’s strategic thinking. China views Nepal under the concept of a ‘community with a shared future’ and also seeks Nepal’s support in favour of multilateralism. In China’s view, Nepal is not merely a neighbour; it is the southern gateway to Tibet, whose security and stability are directly linked to China’s national interests.<\/p>\n

America’s interest, however, is not confined merely to Nepal’s democracy, human rights, and development assistance. The real interest lies in balancing China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. To increase its presence in Nepal, America has expanded the MCC compact, military cooperation, development assistance, and diplomatic engagement. The series of high-level American visits in recent months-the Assistant Secretary of State, the President’s Special Envoy, and now the proposed visit of the Under Secretary of State-clearly signals that America considers Nepal strategically important. Drone activity and intelligence gathering in the Everest region are also alleged to be part of American interests. America appears to be striving to prevent Nepal from falling into China’s sphere of influence and to maintain its own strategic presence.<\/p>\n

For India, Nepal is not merely a neighbour; it is an integral part of its security architecture. The open border, cultural ties, and historical relations have compelled India to defend its traditional sphere of influence in Nepal. India views China’s growing influence as a security concern. In recent months, New Delhi has felt some unease in its relationship with Nepal’s new government. Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s firm stance on ‘protocol’, the customs dispute, the Lipulekh dispute, and the postponement of the Indian Foreign Secretary’s visit have revealed tension in the relationship. Nevertheless, India is striving to maintain its presence through post-earthquake reconstruction in Nepal, development assistance, and people-to-people ties. India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy has accorded high priority to Nepal, and it wishes to balance China’s influence.<\/p>\n

The core of the struggle between these three powers is not merely Nepal’s geographical location; it is a game of global power balance. China seeks to expand its global influence through the BRI, while America wants to halt it. India wishes to defend its traditional sphere of influence. Nepal finds itself at the very centre of these three powers’ interests. This struggle is not confined within Nepal’s borders alone. It affects the entire Himalayan region, South Asia, and the security architecture of the Indo-Pacific. The drone surveillance in the Everest region, border disputes, competition over infrastructure projects, and diplomatic manoeuvring are manifestations of this very power struggle.<\/p>\n

Nepal has not yet fully become a battleground, but signs are emerging that it is advancing on that path. Nepal’s internal political transformation, the new government’s diplomatic style, and the growing interest of external powers have placed Nepal at a sensitive juncture. However, Nepal also has the opportunity to avert this situation. Nepal’s policy of balanced diplomacy, its tradition of a non-aligned foreign policy, and its capacity to maintain equal relations with all powers can save Nepal from becoming a battleground. But for this, Nepal must clearly define its national interest, maintain internal political stability, and conduct balanced relations with external powers.<\/p>\n

In this game, Nepal’s greatest challenge is to safeguard its sovereignty and independence. It is nothing new for global powers to seek to make Nepal a tool of their strategic interests. However, whether Nepal possesses the capacity to determine its own future depends on the foresight of its leadership, its diplomatic skill, and its national unity. For Nepal, the best path is balanced diplomacy. Nepal must maintain equal and mutually beneficial relations with all powers, without becoming a partisan of any. Infrastructure and connectivity with China, a managed border and economic cooperation with India, technology and education with America-all of these can be useful for Nepal’s development. But for this, Nepal must place its sovereignty, independence, and national interest above all else.<\/p>\n

The interest of global powers can be both an opportunity and a challenge for Nepal. To transform it into an opportunity, Nepal needs wise diplomacy, a clear national vision, and internal stability. This country, lying at the foot of Mount Everest, must be able to determine its own future-not by becoming a battleground for global powers, but by becoming a bridge between them. Nepal’s geography can make it a battleground, but Nepal’s leadership can make it a bridge. The decision rests in our own hands.<\/p>\n
