Sanaa. A senior commander of Yemen\u2019s pro-government National Resistance Forces was killed in a roadside bomb attack in the Red Sea province of Hodeidah on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The National Resistance Forces said in a statement that Yahya Wahish, commander of its First Division, was killed in the Al Khawkhah district of southern Hodeidah when an explosive device detonated as his convoy was passing through the area.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, one of Wahish\u2019s escorts was also killed in the blast, while two other escorts were wounded.<\/p>\n

The National Resistance Forces accused the Houthis of planting the bomb. However, there was no immediate response from the Houthi side, and no group had claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n

The National Resistance Forces is led by Tariq Saleh, a member of Yemen\u2019s Presidential Leadership Council and a nephew of the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The force, which was formed with support from the Saudi-led coalition, is headquartered in the strategic coastal city of Mocha near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.<\/p>\n

Yemen has been in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa. In 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in support of Yemen\u2019s internationally recognised government.<\/p>\n

A UN-mediated truce between the Yemeni government and the Houthis was reached in April 2022. Although the formal truce expired six months later, both sides have largely avoided major confrontations since then, maintaining a de facto ceasefire.<\/p>\n

The prolonged conflict has pushed Yemen into one of the world\u2019s most severe humanitarian crises. Millions of people continue to suffer from food insecurity, lack of health services, displacement and shortages of basic services.<\/p>\n

The latest explosion in Hodeidah indicates that, despite the absence of large-scale fighting, serious security risks remain in Yemen.<\/p>\n
