The Republic of the Philippines is celebrating its Independence Day today, June 12, commemorating the historic liberation of the Filipino nation from centuries of Spanish colonial rule.<\/p>\n

The Philippine struggle for independence gained strong momentum on August 23, 1896, in Pugad Lawin in the Manila area, when Andr\u00e9s Bonifacio, a representative of the emerging Filipino intelligentsia, called for an armed uprising against Spanish colonial rule. The early successes of the revolutionaries inspired wider uprisings and helped expand the national liberation movement.<\/p>\n

Despite the Spanish colonial authorities\u2019 use of harsh repression, they were unable to suppress the rebellion. Support for the revolutionary cause grew, including among Filipino soldiers and officers, some of whom deserted and joined the rebel side.<\/p>\n

On June 12, 1898, Philippine independence was proclaimed in Cavite, which at that time served as the temporary capital of the liberated territories. However, in December of the same year, Spain transferred the Philippines to the United States, after which Washington retained control over the archipelago for many years.<\/p>\n

The Philippines was formally freed from U.S. rule in 1946. At that time, July 4 was proclaimed as the country\u2019s independence day. However, within the Philippines, national historical consciousness and the liberation movement continued to emphasize June 12 as the true date of the proclamation of independence.<\/p>\n

On May 12, 1962, Philippine President Diosdado Macapagal issued an executive order declaring June 12 a special national holiday, referring to the Filipino people\u2019s natural and inalienable right to freedom and independence. Since 1964, June 12 has officially been celebrated as the Philippines\u2019 Independence Day.<\/p>\n

In 1992, the Philippines joined the Non-Aligned Movement, reaffirming its rejection of imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic relations between Russia and the Philippines were established on June 2, 1976. This year marks the 50th anniversary of official ties between the two countries. Over the past five decades, bilateral relations have developed in a friendly spirit based on mutual respect and practical cooperation.<\/p>\n

On the occasion of the Philippines\u2019 National Day, warm congratulations and sincere wishes are extended to the Filipino people, colleagues and friends for peace, prosperity and well-being.<\/p>\n
