Moscow \u2013 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani held talks in Moscow on June 11. The two ministers conducted in-depth discussions on contemporary issues related to the further development of Russia\u2013Bahrain friendly relations. They spoke in favor of maintaining regular political dialogue and intensifying exchanges of delegations.<\/p>\n

Both sides emphasized the need to strengthen trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation. In this context, they specifically noted the coordinating role of the Intergovernmental Russian-Bahraini Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.<\/p>\n

A thorough exchange of views also took place on key issues on the international agenda, on most of which Moscow and Manama hold similar or identical positions. With Bahrain having been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council this past January, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close contacts within multilateral platforms, including the United Nations.<\/p>\n

Noting the continued relevance of the Russia\u2013GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Strategic Dialogue, they declared it an effective mechanism for exchanging views on major global and regional issues.<\/p>\n

The Middle East and the Iran Situation:
\nSpecial attention was paid to the situation in the Middle East, particularly the rising tensions around Iran. The ministers stressed that there is no alternative to launching a comprehensive political and diplomatic process aimed at resolving the crisis while ensuring the interests of all states in the region.<\/p>\n

Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia consistently calls on the parties involved to refrain from steps that could lead to the resumption of a large-scale war and derail ongoing efforts to overcome differences. He reaffirmed Russia’s firm support for Bahrain and other Arab states in defending their sovereignty and territorial integrity, and stated that attacks on civilian infrastructure located on their territory are categorically unacceptable.<\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz:
\nThey emphasized the need to swiftly restore stable, unhindered, and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a lifeline for the global economy. Views were also exchanged on Russia’s updated Concept for Collective Security in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n

Gaza and the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict:
\nRegarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, discussions focused on the need for a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, large-scale humanitarian supplies, and the reconstruction of the Palestinian enclave devastated by the war. The need for the earliest possible normalization of the situation in the West Bank was also mentioned.<\/p>\n

Russia and Bahrain stated that they share approaches in favor of a comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian issue on the well-known international legal basis that provides for the establishment of an independent State of Palestine living in peace and security alongside Israel.<\/p>\n

Sergey Lavrov provided his Bahraini counterpart with detailed information on Russia’s fundamental approach to resolving the conflict around Ukraine.<\/p>\n
