A deeper reading of today\u2019s world makes one reality increasingly clear: climate change is no longer merely an environmental issue. It has become a multidimensional crisis directly linked to the economy, energy, food production, water, public health, migration, social stability and national security. Rising temperatures, extreme heat, irregular rainfall, floods, droughts, cyclones, rising sea temperatures and melting glaciers are now affecting human life, production systems and state stability at the same time.<\/p>\n

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the 11 years from 2015 to 2025 were the warmest years on record. This is not only a scientific warning, but also a serious signal for human civilization. Rising temperatures disrupt agricultural cycles, destabilize water sources, increase health risks, raise sea levels, expose mountain regions to greater danger and intensify both the frequency and severity of disasters. The impact is not the same for all countries. Developing, mountainous, coastal and agriculture-dependent countries with low emissions but weak economic and institutional capacity are among the most affected. That is why the climate crisis is also a question of international justice and inequality.<\/p>\n

Food security is one of the sectors most directly affected by the climate crisis. Extreme heat, drought, floods and irregular rainfall affect rice, wheat, maize, vegetables, fruits and livestock. When production declines, prices rise, incomes fall, nutrition crises deepen and social dissatisfaction can increase. Food insecurity is no longer only a production problem; it is also a national security issue linked to distribution, prices, storage, trade, income and political stability.<\/p>\n

The energy sector is also caught between three pressures. First, stable supply is necessary. Second, prices must remain affordable for citizens. Third, a clean energy transition is unavoidable. Oil, gas, coal, hydropower, solar, wind, batteries, green hydrogen and rare minerals are no longer merely economic commodities; they have also become geopolitical instruments. The Russia-Ukraine war, tensions in the Middle East, risks along maritime routes and disruptions in supply chains have brought energy security to the center of global politics.<\/p>\n

Climate, energy and food crises are not separate. Drought can reduce hydropower production. Expensive energy raises the cost of fertilizer, irrigation, transport and food processing. Floods damage farms, roads, bridges and power infrastructure. Heat increases electricity demand, while reduced water flow can lower energy generation. Therefore, this is a combined crisis, and its solution must also be integrated.<\/p>\n

Human security lies at the center of this debate. Traditional security thinking was linked to borders, armies and war. But today, real security is connected to food, water, health, housing, employment, energy, education and a dignified life. A country may have a strong army, but if its citizens are insecure because of heat, hunger, water shortages, disease, inflation and displacement, that country cannot be considered fully secure.<\/p>\n

The climate crisis is increasing migration and displacement. Floods, landslides, sea level rise, desertification, water scarcity and agricultural decline force people to leave their homes. This can increase pressure on cities, create imbalances in labor markets, strain public services and intensify border-related tensions. Similarly, extreme heat, waterborne diseases, malnutrition, air pollution and mental stress further weaken public health systems.<\/p>\n

The gender dimension of this crisis is also important. In societies where women carry greater responsibility for water, food, fuel, children and household care, the burden of climate crisis falls disproportionately on women. Yet women are not only victims; they are also key leaders in local adaptation, food security and community resilience.<\/p>\n

For the Himalayan region, this crisis is even more sensitive. Melting glaciers, the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, irregular monsoons, landslides, changes in river flow and instability in water sources directly affect water, energy, agriculture and ecological balance across Nepal and South Asia. Nepal contributes very little to global emissions, yet it faces severe climate impacts. For this reason, climate security is a national priority linked to Nepal\u2019s development, energy, agriculture, disaster management and foreign policy.<\/p>\n

Five directions are now clear for solutions. First, climate adaptation must be placed at the center of development. Flood early warning systems, landslide risk mapping, safe settlements, climate-resilient roads, improved irrigation, drought-resistant seeds, health preparedness and community disaster plans are essential. Second, a clean and secure energy transition must move forward. Hydropower, solar energy, energy efficiency, electric transport, clean cooking energy and regional energy trade should be expanded in a planned manner.<\/p>\n

Third, food systems must be reformed. Local production, storage, nutrition, insurance, weather information for farmers, climate-smart agriculture and market access should be prioritized. Fourth, human security-centered social protection is needed. Targeted assistance, health services, safe housing and employment programs are necessary for the poor, farmers, workers, women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities and displaced communities. Fifth, international climate finance, technology transfer and regional cooperation must be made practical and effective.<\/p>\n

The climate crisis can no longer be treated as the responsibility of the environment ministry alone. It is linked to finance, energy, agriculture, health, urban development, foreign affairs, home affairs, education and national planning. Every infrastructure project must be tested against climate risk. Every energy policy must be connected to water and food security. Every agricultural policy must be adaptation-oriented. Every national budget must account for climate risk.<\/p>\n

The core truth of the 21st century is this: food security is impossible without climate security. Economic stability is impossible without energy justice. Human security is impossible without water security. And without human security, no nation can truly be secure.<\/p>\n

Therefore, climate, energy, food and human security must not be understood as separate issues. They must be treated as four pillars of a single national and international security framework. The secure nations of the future will be those that give equal priority not only to weapons, but also to the protection of water, food, energy, health, nature and human life.<\/p>\n
