Moscow \u2014 The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia has called for recognizing the crimes committed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators against the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War of 1941 to 1945 as genocide of the Soviet people.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on June 21, 2026, the Parliamentary Assembly said that 85 years ago, Nazi Germany treacherously invaded the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, marking the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.<\/p>\n

The statement said the actions of Nazi Germany and its collaborators were aimed at the extermination of the Soviet people. In the occupied territories, the invaders committed acts intended to fully or partially destroy the national, ethnic, and racial groups living in the Soviet Union, including killings, serious bodily harm, forced displacement, forced transfer of children, and the deliberate creation of living conditions designed to bring about physical destruction, the assembly said.<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Assembly said the war claimed the lives of nearly 27 million Soviet citizens, with civilian losses exceeding 13.6 million.<\/p>\n

The assembly said it is unacceptable to forget the crimes committed by the Nazis. It added that preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is essential to preventing crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, as well as countering the resurgence of Nazism and maintaining universal peace and harmony.<\/p>\n

The statement recalled that Belarus adopted the Law \u201cOn the Genocide of the Belarusian People\u201d on January 5, 2022, while the Russian Federation adopted the Federal Law \u201cOn Perpetuating the Memory of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People during the Great Patriotic War of 1941 to 1945\u201d on April 21, 2025.<\/p>\n

According to the assembly, the legal recognition of the genocide of the Soviet people is a logical continuation of the judgment of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and subsequent court rulings against Nazi criminals and their collaborators.<\/p>\n

Citing the United Nations Charter, the Charter and Judgment of the Nuremberg Tribunal, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and the Convention on the Non-Applicability of Statutory Limitations to War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity, the Parliamentary Assembly said it recognizes the atrocities committed by Nazi German invaders and their collaborators against the population of the Soviet Union as genocide of the Soviet people.<\/p>\n

Members of the assembly called for resolute opposition to all attempts to rewrite history, justify Nazism, or diminish the role of the Soviet people in defeating fascism.<\/p>\n

The statement said support for neo-Nazism for political expediency should be regarded as a threat to all humanity.<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia also called on the United Nations, international interparliamentary organizations and bodies, and parliamentarians around the world to support the statement and adopt similar declarations.<\/p>\n
