Lhasa \u2014 A volunteer team from a private catering company travelled overnight to an earthquake-affected area to provide hot meals for displaced residents, rescue workers and personnel stationed at a temporary relief site, according to local reports.<\/p>\n

The team reportedly arrived at the temporary resettlement site at around 10 a.m. on June 17. Despite fatigue from the overnight journey, the volunteers immediately set up a temporary kitchen and began preparing hot soup and meals for people affected by the disaster and those working on the ground.

By 10:20 a.m. on June 18, a large pot of hot soup had nearly run out. Two volunteers, Tsering Khar and Tseba, who had been serving food, looked around and thought no one else was waiting. Only then did they prepare a bowl for themselves and their colleagues. But as several staff members arrived for food, they handed over the last bowl to one of them, saying they could manage with some bread.<\/p>\n

Soon afterward, the team began preparing a second round of mutton soup. Sempa, the person in charge of the relief kitchen, worked with other volunteers to continue cooking. According to the available account, the team had started preparing breakfast at around 6 a.m. and had worked continuously for about four hours without taking time to eat.<\/p>\n

The catering company, Zothang, specializes in soup-based meals and traditional food. It was founded in 2023 and has reportedly opened more than 50 outlets in Qinghai, Tibet, Gansu, Shanghai and other areas. Sempa, the company\u2019s founder, said helping in the earthquake-hit area was a way to give back to society.<\/p>\n

After learning about the earthquake on the evening of June 16, Sempa called on members of the company\u2019s internal group to take part in relief efforts. A nine-member team was quickly formed, including company managers, outlet supervisors and employees. Sempa said all members joined the effort voluntarily.<\/p>\n

The team then collected emergency food supplies, including mutton, flour and other ingredients worth more than 70,000 yuan, before travelling overnight to the affected area. After arriving at the site, they prepared the first round of hot meals for more than 300 people, local reports said.<\/p>\n

Based on the first day\u2019s experience, the volunteers planned to prepare food for around 1,000 people the following day. The menu reportedly included rice soup with mutton in the morning, stir-fried vegetables for lunch and flour-based soup in the evening. Inside the temporary tent, ingredients such as chili, mushrooms, meat and other supplies had been prepared for the next meals.<\/p>\n

In disaster relief operations, hot meals are not only a matter of nutrition. They also provide comfort and psychological support to displaced residents, exhausted rescue workers and personnel working long hours at temporary resettlement sites. The team said it continued the kitchen service with that need in mind.<\/p>\n

Local accounts said many workers and volunteers at the relief site had been working continuously and had little time for regular meals. In that context, food support from the private sector helped ease pressure on those working at the site.<\/p>\n

Relief distribution in disaster zones, however, requires careful coordination, transparency and sensitivity. Assistance should be delivered according to actual needs, in cooperation with local authorities and rescue mechanisms, while protecting the dignity and privacy of affected people.<\/p>\n

According to the available information, the volunteer team began preparing lunch soon after completing the morning meal service. After an earthquake, needs such as shelter, food, health care, sanitation and psychosocial support often continue beyond the initial emergency phase. Such voluntary efforts are most effective when linked with organized and sustained relief coordination.<\/p>\n

The arrival of the team with hot soup and food supplies highlights the role that local communities, private businesses and volunteers can play during emergencies.
