Geneva, China has called on the international community to harness the potential of artificial intelligence to ensure equal access to human rights for all, including persons with disabilities, older persons and people in vulnerable situations.<\/p>\n

Jia Guide, China\u2019s permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organisations in Switzerland, delivered a joint statement on behalf of 65 countries during the biennial panel on technical cooperation at the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n

The statement urged all parties to use artificial intelligence to promote accessibility and fully implement the council\u2019s resolution on ensuring accessibility for the complete enjoyment of all human rights.<\/p>\n

It stressed that accessibility is essential for the full, equal and effective enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by everyone, particularly persons with disabilities, older people and other vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n

The joint statement put forward four proposals.<\/p>\n

First, it called for a development-oriented approach. It said that promoting accessibility through artificial intelligence could provide fresh momentum for high-quality development.<\/p>\n

Second, it advocated the use of AI for the common good and for the benefit of all. Artificial intelligence should remain people-centred and enable everyone to participate in building society and sharing the benefits of social development.<\/p>\n

Third, the statement emphasised fairness and impartiality, calling for equal access to technology for different social groups and countries at varying levels of development.<\/p>\n

Fourth, it urged the international community to make the benefits of technology more universal and inclusive, reduce the digital divide and address development imbalances. It also called for stronger regional and international exchanges of good practices on accessibility in the context of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Russia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Venezuela, Sudan and Cambodia were among the countries that associated themselves with the statement. Many other developing countries expressed similar positions in their national remarks.<\/p>\n

The initiative reflects a broader effort to link the development of artificial intelligence not only with technological progress, but also with social inclusion, equal opportunity and the effective implementation of human rights.<\/p>\n
