Hong Kong, Hong Kong is expanding its economic significance for global companies by combining its established role as an international financial centre with innovation, technology commercialisation, regional manufacturing networks and access to international markets, according to analysts and business leaders.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong was ranked the world\u2019s second-most competitive economy in the 2026 World Competitiveness Ranking released by the Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development.<\/p>\n

Wang Shuguang, president of China International Capital Corporation, said Hong Kong is no longer limited to serving as a centre for raising capital. It has also become an important base for companies seeking to test new business models, explore industrial applications of emerging technologies and expand into international markets.<\/p>\n

Analysts said Hong Kong\u2019s position within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area strengthens its overall competitiveness through access to a powerful regional manufacturing network.<\/p>\n

The Greater Bay Area has complete supply chains in sectors such as new energy vehicles, advanced equipment and other technology-driven industries. It also has large reserves of engineers, industrial land and manufacturing capacity, Wang said.<\/p>\n

According to him, technologies developed at Hong Kong\u2019s world-class universities and laboratories can be connected with factories and markets across the Greater Bay Area and brought into commercial use within a shorter period.<\/p>\n

Zhou Hao, chief economist at Guotai Junan International, said global companies can establish offices or regional headquarters in Hong Kong and benefit from its dispute-resolution mechanisms, tax advantages, financial system and professional services.<\/p>\n

Such firms can locate their production and other industrial facilities in neighbouring Greater Bay Area cities, allowing Hong Kong to function as a bridge between international management and regional manufacturing.<\/p>\n

Danish transport and logistics company DSV has operated in Hong Kong for about 30 years and has recently expanded both its business activities and office space in the city.<\/p>\n

Nina Barton, DSV\u2019s director of sustainability for the Asia-Pacific region, said Hong Kong\u2019s free-port status, strategic location in the Asia-Pacific, low-tax system and ease of doing business make it well suited for regional operations.<\/p>\n

DSV is cooperating with Hong Kong Science Park to test environmentally sustainable technologies. The company plans to introduce technologies successfully tested in Hong Kong to other markets across the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n

Barton also said the Greater Bay Area could make an important contribution to the green transformation of the aviation industry by expanding the production of sustainable aviation fuel.<\/p>\n

Biotechnology and medical companies are also increasingly using Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area as a platform linking research, clinical trials and commercial production.<\/p>\n

Swiss biotechnology company Quant Biomarkers has established its Asian headquarters in the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park.<\/p>\n

Sanja Baumann-Tomovska, the company\u2019s co-founder and chief executive officer, said Quant Biomarkers plans to establish laboratories in Hong Kong and cooperate with the University of Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

The company aims to conduct research and initial testing in Hong Kong while carrying out large-scale production in other parts of the Greater Bay Area. This strategy is expected to provide easier access to a regional market of about 88 million people.<\/p>\n

According to Invest Hong Kong, the investment promotion agency of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, 413 global companies established or expanded their businesses in Hong Kong during the first six months of 2026.<\/p>\n

The figure represented a 10 percent increase compared with the same period of the previous year.<\/p>\n

The companies are expected to bring more than 53 billion Hong Kong dollars in foreign direct investment and create over 8,600 new jobs.<\/p>\n

Analysts said the combination of financial services, legal protection, a simple tax system, research capacity, technology testing and the Greater Bay Area\u2019s manufacturing network is transforming Hong Kong from a destination for investment into a centre for taking new technologies and business models to global markets.<\/p>\n
