China and Europe have intensified high-level meetings and institutional consultations amid complex disagreements over trade imbalances, market access, industrial competition and economic security.<\/p>\n

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi\u2019s visit to Denmark, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao\u2019s talks with British and European Union officials and the formal establishment of a China\u2013EU trade and investment consultation mechanism indicate that both sides remain willing to manage competition and differences through dialogue.<\/p>\n

China has continued to describe Europe as an important economic and strategic partner, arguing that cooperation rather than rivalry should remain the defining feature of their relationship.<\/p>\n

The European side has also generally favoured managing risks, trade imbalances and market distortions rather than pursuing a complete economic separation from China.<\/p>\n

During meetings in Copenhagen with Danish King Frederik X and Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Wang Yi said China was ready to expand cooperation with Denmark in trade, investment, the green economy, scientific research, innovation, artificial intelligence, healthcare and people-to-people exchanges.<\/p>\n

Wang proposed discussions on a new version of the bilateral green joint work programme and identified green shipping, medical services, education, culture, tourism, youth and sports as areas with further potential.<\/p>\n

Denmark was the first Nordic country to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership with China, and the two countries have maintained institutional cooperation on green transition for several years.<\/p>\n

Noting that China is Denmark\u2019s largest trading partner in Asia, Wang encouraged Danish companies to retain confidence in the Chinese market.<\/p>\n

He also expressed hope that Denmark would provide an open, fair and predictable business environment for Chinese enterprises.<\/p>\n

Rasmussen said Denmark attached importance to China\u2019s role as a major international actor at a time of growing global uncertainty.<\/p>\n

He said Copenhagen was prepared to increase coordination with Beijing through the United Nations and other multilateral platforms, uphold free trade and work together on global challenges, including climate change.<\/p>\n

Rasmussen also expressed Denmark\u2019s willingness to play a positive role in promoting dialogue and cooperation between China and the European Union.<\/p>\n

Wang said China and the EU were partners rather than rivals and that cooperation should remain the fundamental characteristic and principal direction of their relations.<\/p>\n

Alongside the Denmark visit, China and the EU have also launched a new institutional channel for discussing trade and investment.<\/p>\n

Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic co-chaired the first meeting of the China\u2013EU trade and investment consultation mechanism in Brussels.<\/p>\n

Following the meeting, both sides confirmed the formal establishment of the new mechanism, which will serve as a regular ministerial platform for dialogue on trade and investment policy.<\/p>\n

Initial work under the mechanism will focus on four major areas: trade and investment balance, export controls, intellectual property rights and reform of the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n

The two sides also agreed to strengthen the exchange of trade data, monitor unusual market developments, improve transparency and explore joint arrangements for managing disputes before they escalate.<\/p>\n

China and the EU plan to hold one or two ministerial meetings each year, with the second meeting expected to take place in China in the autumn.<\/p>\n

The mechanism is not expected to eliminate all disagreements immediately. Its significance lies in bringing disputes into a regular framework of consultation rather than allowing them to be shaped solely by public accusations, unilateral restrictions or retaliatory measures.<\/p>\n

The European Union has repeatedly raised concerns about its growing goods trade deficit with China, market access, state support, industrial overcapacity and regulatory obstacles faced by European companies in the Chinese market.<\/p>\n

China, meanwhile, has argued that Europe should avoid turning trade and technology questions excessively into political and security issues.<\/p>\n

Beijing has also criticised what it describes as discriminatory rules, market restrictions and protectionist measures directed at Chinese companies, while calling for greater respect for its legitimate economic interests.<\/p>\n

Despite their different concerns, the scale and depth of China\u2013Europe economic ties make continued dialogue unavoidable.<\/p>\n

According to official EU figures, the bloc imported goods worth approximately 559.5 billion euros from China in 2025, while exporting goods worth about 199.5 billion euros to the Chinese market.<\/p>\n

China remains the European Union\u2019s largest source of imported goods and its fourth-largest export market.<\/p>\n

Major Chinese exports to Europe include machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, chemicals and other manufactured products.<\/p>\n

Europe exports machinery, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and high-value industrial goods to China.<\/p>\n

The EU, however, maintains a surplus in services trade with China.<\/p>\n

European companies have made substantial investments in China\u2019s automotive, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and basic materials sectors.<\/p>\n

Chinese investment has also expanded into Europe\u2019s automotive, energy, technology, entertainment and materials industries.<\/p>\n

This level of economic interdependence demonstrates why complete decoupling would be impractical for either side.<\/p>\n

Supply chains in electric vehicles, batteries, solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, consumer goods and industrial machinery remain deeply interconnected across China and Europe.<\/p>\n

Europe requires large volumes of affordable green technology to meet its climate and energy-transition targets.<\/p>\n

China has developed significant production capacity in solar energy, batteries, electric vehicles and clean-energy equipment.<\/p>\n

Europe, in turn, retains major strengths in advanced industrial technology, scientific research, pharmaceuticals, aviation, financial services, brand management and environmental standards.<\/p>\n

These complementary capabilities provide a strong basis for mutually beneficial cooperation.<\/p>\n

The latest high-level economic dialogue between China and the United Kingdom also reflects the continuing demand for practical engagement across Europe.<\/p>\n

Wang Wentao and British Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle co-chaired the 15th meeting of the China\u2013UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission in London.<\/p>\n

The meeting covered trade in goods and services, investment, WTO reform, e-commerce and regional and multilateral economic cooperation.<\/p>\n

Britain has said that the Chinese market offers considerable opportunities for its service industries.<\/p>\n

The two sides are working on measures to expand market access in professional services, finance, healthcare, creative industries, engineering and small and medium-sized enterprises.<\/p>\n

According to British government figures, total trade between China and the United Kingdom reached 135 billion pounds in 2025.<\/p>\n

British service exports to China alone were valued at approximately 21 billion pounds.<\/p>\n

The two countries have also advanced a joint feasibility study on a possible services trade agreement, measures to improve access for British products in China and regular coordination between government and business sectors.<\/p>\n

These developments demonstrate that Europe does not hold a single, uniform position on China.<\/p>\n

Some policymakers give priority to economic security, industrial protection and de-risking.<\/p>\n

Others warn that excessive restrictions could raise costs for European consumers, industries and the green transition, and therefore advocate a more practical approach based on dialogue.<\/p>\n

China expects Europe to take its legitimate trade and economic concerns seriously.<\/p>\n

Europe, for its part, is seeking concrete progress from China on market access, transparency, fair competition and trade balance.<\/p>\n

The future of the relationship will not depend on whether the two sides can conceal their differences, but on whether they can manage them responsibly, equally and with a focus on practical results.<\/p>\n

The latest round of high-level engagement shows that space still exists for China and Europe to prioritise consultation over confrontation.<\/p>\n

New mechanisms, bilateral meetings and sectoral cooperation may not resolve every problem immediately, but they can help build trust, reduce misunderstanding and prevent trade disputes from escalating beyond control.<\/p>\n

At a time when the global economy is under pressure from uncertainty, protectionism and the fragmentation of supply chains, a stable, balanced and mutually beneficial relationship between China and Europe will remain important not only for both sides, but also for global trade and economic stability.<\/p>\n
