Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos during a working visit to Ethiopia, with discussions focusing on expanding cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure, digital technologies, agriculture and multilateral diplomacy.<\/p>\n

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meetings held on July 7 included a substantive exchange on transforming the longstanding friendship and strategic relationship between the two countries into practical economic and humanitarian cooperation.

Lavrov was received by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed before holding formal talks with Foreign Minister Timotheos.<\/p>\n

The Ethiopian side said the two foreign ministers discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, technology transfer and regional and international affairs.<\/p>\n

Timotheos described the friendship between Russia and Ethiopia, developed over generations, as a strong foundation for bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

The two sides agreed to facilitate the establishment and expansion of direct contacts between their business communities.<\/p>\n

The initiative is intended to create favourable conditions for launching joint projects in energy, transport infrastructure, digital technologies, telecommunications, information security and agricultural production.<\/p>\n

Russia has previously identified energy, transport, telecommunications, cybersecurity and agriculture as promising areas of cooperation with Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

These sectors were also highlighted during Lavrov\u2019s earlier visit to Ethiopia in 2022 as potential areas for expanded commercial and technological partnership.<\/p>\n

The latest talks demonstrated an effort to connect strong political relations with tangible economic outcomes.<\/p>\n

Closer links between companies and business organisations are expected to help transform government-level understandings into investment, production, technology-transfer and infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n

Lavrov and the Ethiopian leadership also discussed preparations for the third Russia-Africa Summit, which is scheduled to be held in Russia in October 2026.<\/p>\n

Russia views the summit as an important platform for expanding political dialogue and cooperation with African countries in trade, investment, food security, energy, infrastructure and technology.<\/p>\n

Moscow and Addis Ababa also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination at the United Nations, BRICS and other multilateral platforms.<\/p>\n

The Ethiopian side emphasised the importance of closer consultation on issues of common interest through BRICS and other international mechanisms.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia\u2019s accession to BRICS as a full member has broadened the scope of multilateral cooperation between Moscow and Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n

The Russian side maintains that the two countries hold similar positions on many major international issues, creating a favourable basis for cooperation at the United Nations and other global institutions.<\/p>\n

Considerable attention was also given to conflicts and security challenges in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n

The parties exchanged views on possible approaches to resolving disputes and stabilising the region while respecting the sovereignty of the countries concerned, political dialogue and the role of regional mechanisms.<\/p>\n

Russia has consistently supported the principle that African problems should be addressed primarily through African-led initiatives and solutions.<\/p>\n

Moscow advocates cooperation based on national sovereignty, non-interference and the principles of the United Nations Charter rather than external pressure or unilateral intervention.<\/p>\n

Lavrov arrived in Addis Ababa on the evening of July 6.<\/p>\n

He was welcomed at the airport by Ambassador Meles Alem, director general for European and American affairs at Ethiopia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n

Ethiopian officials said the visit reflected the expanding partnership between the two countries in political dialogue, economic cooperation, education, science, technology and international affairs.<\/p>\n

Addis Ababa regards Russia as one of its important strategic partners in Africa.<\/p>\n

Formal diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia were established in 1898.<\/p>\n

Relations were interrupted following the Russian Revolution of 1917 and restored in 1943.<\/p>\n

Both countries describe their historic relationship as being founded on national independence, sovereignty, mutual respect and longstanding friendship between their peoples.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the meetings were held in a warm and trusting atmosphere marked by mutual understanding.<\/p>\n

According to the ministry, the high-level dialogue once again confirmed the strategic nature of Russia-Ethiopia relations and helped consolidate the traditions of friendship between the two peoples.<\/p>\n
