Seven former Nepali ambassadors to China have expressed serious objection to the official celebration of the 91st birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama in Kathmandu, drawing the government’s attention to the matter. They have warned that such an event raises questions about Nepal’s long-standing commitment to the One-China policy.<\/p>\n

Former ambassadors Rajeshwar Acharya, Mahendra Pandey, Tank Karki, Mahesh Maskey, Lilamani Poudel, Vishnupukar Shrestha, and Krishna Prasad Oli issued a joint statement expressing concern over the participation of foreign diplomatic missions’ representatives in Sunday’s event held at Namgyal School in Nagarjun Municipality-2.<\/p>\n

The ceremony took place after the District Security Committee held a meeting on a public holiday and granted permission for the program. The former ambassadors have claimed that if the event was held with the government’s knowledge or approval, it would adversely affect the One-China policy, which serves as the cornerstone of Nepal-China diplomatic relations.<\/p>\n

They recalled that Nepal has always firmly adhered to the One-China policy and has consistently expressed its commitment not to allow any activity from Nepali territory that could be detrimental to any friendly nation. Noting that Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal had reiterated this commitment during his recent visit to China, they raised the question: “Has Nepal now changed its foreign policy toward its neighbors?”<\/p>\n

The former ambassadors have expressed concern that such activities could negatively impact Nepal’s geopolitical balance, which it has been maintaining. Warning that such activities could be counterproductive to the country’s stability, development, and independence, they have urged the government and all stakeholders to remain vigilant and cautious.<\/p>\n

In their statement, they have drawn the government’s attention to ensure that such activities are not repeated in the future and to exercise greater sensitivity in matters concerning relations with neighboring countries.<\/p>\n
