Russia has accused British officials of using sport as a tool of political pressure following the International Olympic Committee\u2019s decision to reinstate the rights of the Russian Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the British political establishment had once again launched anti-Russian verbal attacks, this time in response to the IOC\u2019s decision concerning the Russian Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n

According to Moscow, the rhetoric of British officials shows that sport has long been treated in the United Kingdom as an instrument of political pressure. Russia said that under the slogan of supporting Ukraine, London has consistently campaigned in recent years to exclude Russian athletes from international competitions.<\/p>\n

Moscow described such efforts as discrimination on the basis of nationality. It argued that excluding athletes because of their nationality contradicts the fundamental spirit of the Olympic Charter, which is based on equality, dialogue and unity through sport.<\/p>\n

The IOC recently provisionally lifted the suspension imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee. The ROC had been suspended in 2023 after it incorporated sports organizations from territories linked to the conflict in Ukraine into its structure. The latest decision could make it easier for Russian athletes to return to international competitions ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.<\/p>\n

However, the IOC has not yet made a final decision on whether Russia will be allowed to use its national flag, anthem or official national symbols at the Olympics. Russian athletes will also still be required to comply with anti-doping standards. Some international sports federations may continue to maintain their own restrictions or eligibility rules.<\/p>\n

Russia has welcomed the IOC decision as a step in the right direction. Moscow said the move shows that common sense, Olympic principles and the true spirit of sport can prevail over political expediency.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry also accused the United Kingdom of hypocrisy and double standards. According to Moscow, London has not made similar demands against athletes from countries allied with the UK whose armed forces are involved in military conflicts.<\/p>\n

Russia said Britain\u2019s position fits into a broader Western policy of trying to inflict a \u201cstrategic defeat\u201d on Moscow. It also suggested that attempts to exclude Russian athletes from major international competitions may be linked to a desire to remove a strong sporting competitor, as Russia remains one of the world\u2019s leading sporting nations.<\/p>\n

The United Kingdom and Ukraine have expressed dissatisfaction with the IOC\u2019s move. Ukrainian athletes and some Western advocacy groups have argued that allowing Russia\u2019s return while the Russia-Ukraine war continues is inappropriate. Some British officials and campaign groups have also raised concerns over sporting ethics and anti-doping standards.<\/p>\n

The IOC decision has opened a new debate in international sport. Russia sees it as a move toward freeing sport from political punishment, while Ukraine and Western critics argue that caution is necessary due to the ongoing war, Russia\u2019s doping history and wider questions of international rules.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry said efforts to use sport for political purposes must end. According to Moscow, the IOC\u2019s decision has shown that global sport can return to its primary purpose: bringing people together rather than dividing them.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s position is that international sport should not become a platform for political punishment against any country. Moscow argues that excluding athletes on the basis of nationality or political disputes weakens the Olympic spirit and risks further dividing global sport.<\/p>\n
