Osteoporosis, a condition that reduces bone density and strength, can develop for years without clear symptoms, making early detection difficult. In many cases, the condition is identified only after a bone breaks following a minor fall or injury.<\/p>\n

A fracture caused by falling from standing height, a light impact or even bending over is considered one of the most important warning signs of osteoporosis. The wrists, hips and spine are among the areas most commonly affected.

Sudden or persistent back pain without a major accident may also indicate that a weakened vertebra has compressed or fractured. Osteoporosis itself does not always cause pain, but small fractures in the spine can lead to severe or long-lasting discomfort.<\/p>\n

Loss of height, a forward-leaning posture, a rounded back or difficulty standing upright may also suggest weakening of the spinal bones. When one or more vertebrae become compressed, a person\u2019s posture can change and overall height may decrease.

The risk is higher among postmenopausal women, older adults, people with low body weight and those with a family history of osteoporosis or hip fractures. Long-term use of corticosteroid medicines can also increase the risk. Physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and inadequate calcium or vitamin D intake may further weaken bones.<\/p>\n

Loose teeth, brittle nails, muscle pain and general fatigue, however, should not be regarded as definite signs of osteoporosis. These symptoms may also result from gum disease, nutritional deficiencies, anaemia, thyroid disorders or other health conditions.

A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DXA, scan is widely used to measure bone mineral density and diagnose osteoporosis. The test is usually performed on the hips and spine and can also help assess the likelihood of future fractures.<\/p>\n

A balanced diet containing sufficient calcium and vitamin D, regular walking, weight-bearing exercise and activities that improve muscle strength and balance can help protect bone health. Health experts advise medical evaluation when a minor fall causes a fracture, severe back pain develops suddenly, height decreases or posture becomes noticeably stooped.<\/p>\n
