Australian electricity and gas retailer Origin Energy has launched an investigation into a potential security incident that may have involved unauthorised access to the personal information of some customers.<\/p>\n

In a statement submitted to the Australian Securities Exchange on July 22, the company said the possible security breach may have affected certain customer data.<\/p>\n

Origin Energy said its preliminary investigation had found no indication that customers\u2019 credit card or bank account details were affected. The company has not disclosed the nature of the incident, the number of customers potentially involved or how the unauthorised access may have occurred.<\/p>\n

The announcement followed a claim by an individual who said they had accessed the records of around 2 million customers and provided an Australian media outlet with a sample containing information on 50 customers.<\/p>\n

The sample reportedly included customers\u2019 names, residential addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and electricity billing histories. No ransom demand has been reported.<\/p>\n

The claim that approximately 2 million customers were affected has not been independently verified. The company is conducting a digital forensic investigation to determine the authenticity of the claim, the possible scale of the breach and the risks posed to customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand an incident like this may raise concerns and acknowledge the impact of this uncertainty on Origin customers,\u201d the company said. \u201cOur investigations into this incident are occurring as a matter of urgency, and Origin will provide further updates as appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Origin Energy has informed the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Australian Federal Police about the potential incident. It also said it was coordinating with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.<\/p>\n

Origin Energy provides electricity, natural gas and other energy services across Australia and reportedly serves more than 4.7 million customers.<\/p>\n

Following disclosure of the possible data breach, Origin Energy\u2019s share price fell by around 2.5 percent during Wednesday trading on the Australian Securities Exchange.<\/p>\n

The company has not yet issued a formal warning about the possibility of fraudulent emails, phone calls or messages targeting customers while the investigation continues. Affected customers are expected to be contacted directly once the actual scale of the incident has been established.<\/p>\n
