Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n has accused the government led by current Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar of attempting to eliminate its political opponents.<\/p>\n

Speaking at an annual event in B\u0103ile Tu\u0219nad, Romania, on Saturday, Orb\u00e1n said in Russian, \u201c\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c?\u201d meaning \u201cWhat is to be done?\u201d He invoked the title of the well-known novel by Russian writer Nikolai Chernyshevsky while commenting on Hungary\u2019s current political situation.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n alleged that the Magyar government\u2019s actions were aimed at removing major political rivals from national politics. He argued that citizens could become vulnerable to the state if political alternatives were systematically weakened.<\/p>\n

His remarks came several days after the term of Hungarian President Tam\u00e1s Sulyok was brought to an end.<\/p>\n

On July 13, parliament, where Magyar\u2019s Tisza Party holds a two-thirds majority, approved a constitutional amendment. Sulyok signed the amendment on July 18, bringing his presidency to an end.<\/p>\n

The Magyar government had accused Sulyok of remaining under the influence of the former Orb\u00e1n administration and failing to represent constitutional balance and national unity. It described the change as part of an effort to restore the rule of law.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n and his Fidesz party, however, have characterised the termination of the president\u2019s mandate, the retroactive introduction of a 12-year term limit for lawmakers and moves to remove officials appointed during the Orb\u00e1n era as political retaliation and the beginning of authoritarian rule.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n has announced plans to organise a peaceful \u201cresistance movement\u201d against the Magyar government.<\/p>\n

Magyar\u2019s Tisza Party ended Orb\u00e1n\u2019s 16-year rule in the parliamentary election held in April. Since then, the new government has launched efforts to restructure public media, judicial bodies and other state institutions shaped during the Orb\u00e1n era.<\/p>\n

The government describes the programme as a democratic reform initiative, while Fidesz argues that it is an attempt to eliminate opposition forces through institutional means.<\/p>\n
