The Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army Navy has deployed its new-generation Z-20J helicopters in joint landing exercises with Type 071 amphibious dock landing ships and Type 075 amphibious assault ships.<\/p>\n

Images released by China Military Online showed the Type 071 amphibious dock landing ship Changbaishan, Hull 989, conducting coordinated operations with Z-20J shipborne helicopters and a landing craft air cushion during a multi-subject maritime training exercise.<\/p>\n

The Changbaishan, attached to a naval flotilla under the PLA Southern Theater Command, conducted the exercise in mid-to-late July, according to China Military Online. The training integrated helicopters and landing craft in coordinated maritime operations.<\/p>\n

China Central Television previously released footage showing Z-20J helicopters operating from the decks of the Type 075 amphibious assault ships Hainan and Hubei. A Z-20J deployed aboard the Hubei also participated in combat-oriented training in the South China Sea, CCTV reported.<\/p>\n

According to CCTV, the Z-20J\u2019s successful take-off and landing operations aboard Type 075 vessels indicate that the new-generation utility helicopter is being integrated into the core structure of the Chinese Navy\u2019s amphibious operational system.<\/p>\n

The Z-20J was publicly unveiled for the first time at Airshow China 2024, held in Zhuhai, South China\u2019s Guangdong Province, in November 2024.<\/p>\n

Chinese military affairs expert Song Zhongping told the Global Times that the Z-20J\u2019s increasing appearances aboard different types of warships indicate that its production, deployment and operational capabilities have expanded steadily since its debut.<\/p>\n

Compared with the earlier Z-8C helicopter, the Z-20J offers greater payload capacity, broader mission flexibility and a more standardised maintenance and technical support system for amphibious landing operations, Song said.<\/p>\n

Different variants developed from the same Z-20 platform can perform reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, troop transport, vertical landing, attack, and search-and-rescue missions. This reduces the need to maintain separate technical support systems for several different helicopter types aboard the same vessel.<\/p>\n

The Z-20 is a China-developed, 10-ton-class medium utility helicopter. Its Z-20J variant is designed mainly for troop transport, vertical assault and landing operations in maritime environments, according to CCTV.<\/p>\n

The Z-20J can operate from Type 075 amphibious assault ships and Type 071 landing platform docks, as well as Type 055 and Type 052D destroyers and Type 054A frigates, CCTV said.<\/p>\n

Analysts said the coordinated deployment of Z-20J helicopters, air-cushion landing craft and large amphibious vessels could further strengthen the Chinese Navy\u2019s integrated capabilities in troop and equipment transport, maritime search and rescue, and emergency-response operations.<\/p>\n
