Released on July 15, the film attracted approximately 330,000 admissions on its opening day, delivering the strongest debut of any film released in South Korea this year. KoBiz, operated by the Korean Film Council, also described it as the biggest opening day of Na’s career.

According to the Korean Film Council’s nationwide box-office data, “HOPE” had accumulated more than 3.85 million admissions and approximately US$29 million by July 31. It controlled more than 58 percent of daily box-office revenue on July 28. Although the arrival of a major American blockbuster pushed it into second place, it remained the leading domestic title.

“HOPE” is Na’s first feature since “The Wailing” in 2016. The 156-minute production combines science fiction, thriller and action within the fictional port village of Hopo. When communication with the outside world is cut off and an unidentified threat appears, fear, misunderstanding and conflicting decisions begin to divide the isolated community. KoBiz describes the story as a local tragedy that grows into a much larger confrontation between opposing perspectives.

The cast includes leading Korean actors Hwang Jung-min and Zo In-sung. International performers Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton also appear, portraying mysterious characters through motion-capture and facial-capture technology. The production therefore combines a distinctly Korean setting with international casting and large-scale technical collaboration.

The film had already attracted global attention before its domestic release. “HOPE” competed in the main competition of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, marking Na’s first appearance in the festival’s official competition. Following its world premiere at Cannes, Neon acquired distribution rights for North America, the United Kingdom and Australia, while Mubi secured several major European and Latin American territories.

KoBiz reported that the film had been pre-sold to more than 200 territories. Its commercial prospects therefore extend far beyond the Korean theatrical market. The combination of a Cannes competition selection, international performers, worldwide distribution and a strong domestic opening has made it one of the Korean film industry’s most significant projects of 2026.

The importance of “HOPE” does not rest only on its scale or cast. Na places an unidentified danger, communal fear and conflict born from incompatible viewpoints within a recognisably Korean village environment. The result can be read not simply as a science-fiction story about an external threat, but also as an examination of how fear, prejudice and failed communication can divide a community.

Its daily market share declined after the arrival of a foreign blockbuster, reflecting the intensity of South Korea’s theatrical competition. Nevertheless, more than 3.85 million domestic admissions, a Cannes competition berth and pre-sales across over 200 territories confirm that “HOPE” has strengthened both audience confidence in major Korean productions and the global prospects of Korean genre cinema.

Dragon Media News Desk South Korean director Na Hong-jin’s science-fiction thriller “HOPE” has strengthened its position as one of the country’s most prominent films of 2026 during its second week in cinemas.
